Highhwic | Auckland | Sights | Places

This expansive Gothic manor house is a must for those who love the past, present, architecture and garden. It is the heritage of the early Colonist Alfred Buckland. Buckland, a business man, agriculturist and a father of 21 offspring, made a sustained and sustained commitment to the province of Auckland in the nineteenth and eighteenth centuries. Highwic was erected in 1862 as Buckland's home on a hill overlooking the growing Newmarket, today Auckland's most important mall.

Among the many rooms of the castle are a cooker cuisine - still the centrepiece of the building today - as well as the ball room and the boys' home, which are very much appreciated by today's people. Stable and a billiards room belong to the various annexes, surrounded by spacious vicerian theme areas, high hedgerows, old solitary tables, a fernshop, grass court for grass court playing on grass court and a' hearts walk' on meanders.

Highwic's self-guided walk takes you on a fascinating journey back in history to Buckland's busy home times and into the fast moving countryside of New Zealand's Colonies. A short briefing by your Highwic host will allow you to take a leisurely walk around the grounds.

Kids will enjoy the exploration trip "house hunting" and the quaint garden. Attempt to plan your visits for the frequent coal-fired festivities and see the event page for other important festivities throughout the year. Highhwic is available as an impressive event location for personal and professional use.

Highhwic is the first stop on the Waikato War of the New Zealand Rural War, during which the locations of this event (1863-64) are visited. The Buckland & Sons benefited from the war by providing the Emperor's forces with horse and other relief goods. Go back in epoch to New Zealand with one of his original'Grand Designs'.
