This expansive Gothic manor house is a must for those who love the past, present, architecture and garden. It is the heritage of the early Colonist Alfred Buckland. Buckland, a business man, agriculturist and a father of 21 offspring, made a sustained and sustained commitment to the province of Auckland in the nineteenth and eighteenth centuries. Highwic was erected in 1862 as Buckland's home on a hill overlooking the growing Newmarket, today Auckland's most important mall.

Among the many rooms of the castle are a cooker cuisine - still the centrepiece of the building today - as well as the ball room and the boys' home, which are very much appreciated by today's people. Highhwic is the first stop on the Waikato War of the New Zealand Rural War, during which the locations of this event (1863-64) are visited.
