the World Cruising and Sailing Wiki travel guide

Vinuatu is an insular state in the South Pacific, located between Fiji and New Caledonia. From Vanuatu you can easily travel to Australia to the east, New Zealand to the south or the Solomon Islands to the northwest. Please keep in mind that most boats in the cycle area leave Vanuatu before the beginning of November, when the cycle period begins (but keep in mind that there are no calendars).

However, it is possible to stay in Vanuatu during the cycle period - either by taking off at Port Vila Boatyard or by taking a suitable berth in one of the cycle wells, e.g. Havannah Harbour. Due to the predominant breezes and the heading of the archipelago, a boat will want to enter Vanuatu around the South Isles, perhaps Lenakel on the Isle of Tanna or Port Vila itself, and then work its way down to the northwest.

There is a terminal in Sola on the North Bank Islands, but it is also possible to obtain a temporary permit in Vanuatu after check-in in Luganville or Porta Vila. Boats sailing to New Zealand, New Caledonia or the south harbours of Australia can start directly from the city.

It is certainly possible to work in leeward to some of the North Island and then take an upstream section back to Port Vila if you prefer. Vanuatu has many coves and islets to discover and it is definitely a good idea to spend some quality of life. The Vanuatu Meteorological Services publishes a 7-day terrestrial prediction and a 4-day sea prediction for different areas of Vanuatu (see the link on the lefthand side of the homepage for sea prediction).

New Zealand's Gulf Harbour radio is issuing a prediction for the South Pacific as part of their early bird programme, which will cover both the Vanuatu area and the transit rain. Also see Port Vila. Because of the predominant wind conditions (SE in the travel season), the western coast of most of Vanuatu's major isles offer preferred destinations on the eastern coast.

View boat cleanance detail. The quarantine legislation requires the ship to carry the yellowness banner as soon as it arrives in the Vanuatu EEZ. When arriving at the harbour, ships can call customs via VHF channel 16 (currently only in Ports Vila and Lenakel). The captain of all boats arriving in Vanuatu from a overseas harbour or town must first register with the customs, quarantine and immigration services in the Lenakel or Luganville or Sola docks.

Ships may not call at Mystery lsland (Aneityum) or Port Resolution (Tanna) or any other place in Vanuatu before calling at any of the above mentioned harbours for custom clearances, unless the Director of Tax and Excise has given his previous inscription. Masters of ships visiting these places before receiving custom clearances, inter-island cruise permits or writing permits may be fined and/or prosecuted.

Sailing boats or other recreational craft that visit Vanuatu on a temporary basis may be licensed duty-free, provided the ship is in any case: If Vanuatu has embarked on a journey on its own account from a different harbour or location; belongs to a passenger or passenger traveling, owned, rented, charters or otherwise rented on the ship at the moment of arriving in Vanuatu; is for the passenger or passenger's own use on the ship and may not be used for business purposes in Vanuatu;

Not to be resold, loaned, rented, leased, pawned or otherwise alienated in Vanuatu and not to be used for business purposes in Vanuatu; may not stay in Vanuatu for more than 18 month for a 24 month term, except in circumstances (including a transfer of domicile) recognised by the Customs Director as extraordinary and ineditable.

Ships become subject to customs duties if they are dumped in Vanuatu, if they are used for business purpose, if they stay in Vanuatu for more than 18 month in two years or if they are brought in by a Vanuatu inhabitant. Boats may not stop on any other islands or anchorages in Vanuatu before official clearance, unless they have obtained advance permission in writing from customs.

Departure is only possible from Monday to Friday from 07:30 to 11:00 and from 13:30 to 16:00. It is only possible to stop on the Aneityum ( "Anatom") and complete the grubbing-up in Tanna with previous permission. Customs officers no longer travel regularly to Port Resolution on Tanna, if you want to clear in there, you should obtain your permission in writing or go to Lenakel first.

When you drop anchor in Port Vila, in the quarantined area near the yellows beacon. I want you to call Port Vila Harbour Control on Channel 16. lf they don't respond, try Yachting World Vanuatu on Channel 16. They' ll be contacting custom and isolation for you. Don't land without prior clearance, without express orders from custom officers who instruct you otherwise, by phone or wireless.

If you wish to prolong your residence, you must contact the Port Vila INS. Port Vila's Department of Migration is located in the city center, past the market, on the top floor of a unmarked school. Jurisdiction for the advice of migration services when a member of the cabin crew wants to depart shall lie with the captain, who is responsible for returning the members of the cabin crew, unless and until he is exempted from this duty.

All goods brought on the vessel which are either in Vanuatu or in transit through Vanuatu must be registered with the customs authorities on the day of the vessel's or its crew's in-flight. Upon your check-in, all weapons and munitions must be declaring and handed over to the customs officer for safekeeping.

When customs are happy, the guns and munitions can be securely locked on board. Where there are no appropriate secure locking systems, the goods shall be kept from customs until the time of dispatch. They must inform customs 48hrs before the planned dispatch from the last check-in harbour.

It is advisable to cancel at least one month in advance if you plan to leave a different one. Where the ship has goods, in particular cigarettes or spirits, in excess of these exemptions, they must be placed under security until they are dispatch.

It is forbidden to land any rubbish in Vanuatu without the quarantine service's consent. Once customs and immigration procedures have been completed at the point of arrival, the captains of any ship that wishes to call on other of the group's vessels must notify the customs services of their planned shipments and request customs clearances between the group.

Custom-free goods can be loaded on any ship that has vacated to the outside or is about to vacate to the outside for a destination abroad. Ask the local authorities for the appropriate documents and terms at the point of your travel. These charges are invoiced and can be settled at the post-clearance check.

A copy of the quarantine bill and a receipts for your payments is necessary to receive the outgoing inspection. Boats departing Vanuatu for a destination in a different country are obliged to consult the customs and immigration services at the last dock. None of the vessels may call at an offshore terminal after it has received external customs clearances, unless it has the previous permission in writing from the Customs Director (which is usually imminent).

Boats leaving or departing Porta Vila can buy free goods in any number of stores in the city. You can checkout "provisionally" in Porta Vila and the liquor is bonded; it may not be used until the moment of definitive check-in and depart. For the first 30 or part of the 30 day stay all visitors of small boats have to cover harbour fees of 7.000 Vatu.

The harbour dues are payable at the custom house in the last harbour of depart. Currently Vanuatu has four (4) approved ports of entry: All over Vanuatu and especially outside the village of Porto Vila, village living is strongly affected by "kastom" - a series of folk traditions and tales that are valid for all sorts of things.

Port Vila's listing in this volume is a little out of date, but mostly still correct. This is a list of most of Vanuatu's most important moorings over several parts of the work.
