Lihue, Kauai First Order Information Center

The Lihue Airport, just over 100 ft above sealevel, is situated near the east bank of the Isle of Kauai. It is 33 miles long and 25 miles broad and covers an area of 555 square miles. Kauai's east third is made up of widely cultivated valleys, the west third is predominantly upland.

Kawaikini, the highest point of the archipelago, is located near the centre of Kauai and is 20 miles north-west of the airportl. Distinguishing characteristics of the climatic conditions are the constant temperature from sun to sun and from year to year, the constant northeastern trade wind and the strong fluctuations of precipitation from the rainy to the arid seasons and from place to place.

Uniform temperature is due to the position of the central sea and the low level of seasonality of the amount of solar power consumed. From the coldest months, February, to the hottest months, August, the temperature is below 8C. Most of the year the Trades wind blows over the isle and the predominance of these breezes has a strong impact on the region's weather.

Tradeshowers are relatively frequent. Mt Waiale gets 486 inch per year, the highest registered mean per year in the year. Mt Waiale has registered precipitation of more than 620inch a year. The standard precipitation is over 40 inch per year. Three quarters of these fall on averages during the seven-month rainy period, which runs from October to April.

The most common rainfall during this time is common, accounting for a large proportion of it. Regular rainfall in January, the wetest week of the year, is over 6-inch. May to September is the drying time. June, the dryest of all the rainy days, gets only about 1.5 inch of it. Powerful wind sometimes occurs in conjunction with windstorm system movement through the area, but rarely causes major damages.

During the rainy period, the air temperature, which is moderately high to high in all periods of the year, is slightly higher than in the rainy time. The reason for this is the Passat wind, which provides most of the year for naturally ventilated air.
