Kiribati, the widely dispersed country, known as " Kir-ee-bahs ", is situated in the Pacific Ocean on the edge of the equator and comprises the island groups Gilbert, Phoenix and Line. Kiribati's water ways were witness to intensive fishing activity in the nineteenth c.. During the Second World War, the island was an important battleground. Part of the Gilbert and Ellice Island Empire, it became fully independent of Britain in 1979, just before the precious phosphorus resources on the island of Banaba were exhausted.
In 1981 Kiribati received million for the complete extraction of this important natural resources. Gilbert Island receives the most rainfalls, while the Phoenix and Line Island are sparsely rained and dry for longer seasons.
Atoll Kiritimati (Christmas Island)
The Kiritimati toll Conservation Area was created to promote the conservation of seawater, create new conservation areas and reinforce already extant conservation areas such as Kirimati Island Wildlife Sanctuary.
It has the largest surface area of all reef atolls in the world: about 322 km2; its laguna is about the same area. It has a circumference of about 150 km, while the shore of the lake stretches over 48 km.
