Milford Sound's rainy season, and it often does, is a great time for these falls to mingle. Excursions by ship - either during the night or during the night - are an ideal way to enjoy the sound.

At the 2006 Milford Sound survey, only 120 inhabitants lived[19], most of whom work in either nature protection or travel. Each year Milford Sound draws between 550,000 and 1 million listeners. 19 ][20] This makes the sound one of New Zealand's most popular destinations for tourists, despite its remoteness and long travel time from the closest populations.

These are provided by several operators starting from the Milford Sound Visitors' Center. There are also a small number of businesses that offer night cruises by boats. Otherwise there are only few possibilities to spend the night at the Sound, and only a very small proportion of visitors stays longer than the rest of the year. Usually tourist live in Te Anau or Queenstown.

When it rains and is windy, visitors can watch the breeze playing with the Milford Sound cascades. Milford Sound on the street is 291 km (181 mi) from Queenstown and 278 km (173 mi) from Invercargill (about four hour drive),[23] with the most coaches to Sound starting from Queenstown.

Milford Sound Airport also offers sightseeing air travel by lightweight planes and chopper-touring. Milford Sound itself leads you through untouched mountains, before it flows into the 1.2 km long Homer Tunnel, which flows into rainy gorges that descent to Sound. Although the curvy Bergstrasse is of a high standard, it is very susceptible to snow and ice during the six months of autumn and autumn.
