Bird-Island Nature Reserve - Cape Nature

This is a unique chance for the visitor to see the blue-eyed booby at first hand. One of only six locations in the globe where boobies nest, Bird Island is the only hatchery that is easy for the population. On the cliffs of the island you can see harbour lizards sunbathing.

From the well-located booby viewpoint of the island, the visitor can get closer to the bird and watch its incomparable pairing-dance. Bird skin is marked with interesting information about these sea-fowl and their customs. This viewpoint is an outstanding viewpoint for the visitor to explore the island's boobies. Coming from Cape Town, take the N7 towards Clanwilliam.

When you arrive in Lambert's Bay, please keep following the signposts to the port and Bird Island. You can see these magnificent animals near the shoreline as the right whale is enjoying the hot waters after its migration from the frozen Antarctic. The only place in the whole wide open space where Cape boobies are breeding, Bird Island is a bird watchers' wonder.

This hideaway is the perfect place to see their activity first-hand and find out more about their hatchery practices. Not only is Bird Island a touristic site, it is also used for research. Investigations carried out on the island relate to bird population in the forms of surveillance, censorship and patrolling.

On the site, a hide-and-seek center has been set up where the visitor can watch and record the activity of these determined bird life at first hand.
