De Nova Island - Introduction of Juan de Nova Island background: Issue of the Glorieuses Island, Juan de Nova, Europe and Bassas da India. It recalls its General Assembly on the issue of the isles of Glorieuses, Juan de Nova, Europe and Bassas da India, its Declaration on the granting of independence to colonial countries and peoples, 1514 (XV) of 14 December 1960, and the Declaration on the principles of international law on friendly relations and cooperation between States in accordance with the United Nations Charter,

of 24 October 1970, taking into account its UNSCR 34/21 of 9 November 1979 and earlier United Nations-African Unity cooperation agreements, taking into account the conclusions of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the Organisation of African Unity on the Isles of Glorieuses, Juan de Nova, Europe and Bassas da India at their fifteenth[1] and sixteenth[2] ordinary part, as amended by Res, in particular its meeting on 24 October 1970 (XXV),

in Khartoum from 18 to 22 July 1978 and in Monrovia from 17 to 20 July 1979, having regard to that part of the political declaration[3] on the Malagasy Isles in the Indian Ocean adopted by the Sixth Conference of Heads of State and Government of non-aligned countries in Havana from 3 to 9 September 1979 and having regard to the pertinent United Nations Charter rules on the pacific resolution of differences,

having regard to Madagascar's application for the re-integration of the isles of Glorieuses, Juan de Nova, Europe and Bassas da India[4] whereas the Government of Madagascar has on several occasions expressed its readiness to open talks with the Government of France with a view to reaching a settlement of the issue in accordance with the objectives and fundamental tenets of the Charter of the United Nations, 1.

Reiterates the need to conscientiously respect the colonies sovereignty and regional sovereignty at the moment of its entry into sovereignty; 3. Calls on the French Government to open immediate talks with the Government of Madagascar on the re-integration of the above mentioned archipelagos, which have been indiscriminately segregated from Madagascar; 4.

Urges the French Government to lift those policies that violate Madagascar's independence and regional integration and to abandon other policies that could have the same effect and impede the quest for a just settlement of the current conflict; 5. Asks the Secretary-General to monitor the application of this decision and to submit a statement to the General Assembly at its thirty-fifth meeting; 6. Resolves to add to the preliminary agendas of its thirty-fifth meeting an issue concerning the Malagasy Isles Glorieuses, Juan de Nova, Europe and Bassas da India.
