Obtain Nuku Hiva Island's weather and area codes, time zone and daylight saving time. The Nuku Hiva was very different from the other islands we visited during our cruise through French Polynesia. It is a lush, rugged island with many breathtaking views.

The Nuku-Hiva is a community of Polynesia, a Pacific Ocean area of France..... It is located in the Marquesas archipelago. Nuku-Hiva consists of the actual island of Nuku Hiva (339 km2), which comprises the whole of the municipality's inhabitants, and the unpopulated islands:

Taiohae village on the south side of the island of Nuku Hiva is the municipality's administration area.

The top 10 things to do in Nuku Hiva Island

That' s how I felt in Nuku Hiva, although fortunately the Dolphins were nowhere to be found. Nuku Hiva, the largest of the secluded Marquesas Islands of France and Polynesia, is incredibly rugged and there is hardly anyone here. There are unforgettable walks, beautiful scenery, archaeological places and much more to get you tired - this is not the right place to recharge your battery.

While I was traveling with my backpack across the South Pacific Isles I stayed five nights in Nuku Hiva, and here is my own private schedule of the most important activities in Nuku Hiva. On the way to Polynesia? You will find guidebooks to 11 isles, with example programs and many travelling hints and trips. It is no wonder on such a secluded island that few have ever known Nuku Hiva's Grand Canyon.

The unbelievable stream, which runs deeply between huge rocks, can only be seen from the sky and on the way from the airfield to Taiohae - the most beautiful transfer you will ever have! In spite of the strange event of a Nauku Hiva hunt by a British tour operator who was killed, those who are looking to get off the well-trodden paths (and easily kill an animal) should find a native and go on a hunt.

There is nothing that fired the men of Nuku Hiva as much as the possibility to go on hunts. It' a lifestyle in the Marquesas, either go chasing or go to the mall! This is Nuku Hiva: versatile, pretty and always stunning. You' ll be visiting the Toovii Plateau as you move from one side of the island to the other, but you can also go on horse back or on foot.

Most of the time I suggest that you move your purchases to Tahiti, but not when you visit the Marquesas isles. They are among the best woodcarvers in the South Pacific, transforming sandpit, palisander, volcanic rocks and even wildlife into works of artwork. The best handicraft fair I've found on the island, Nuku Hiva is situated in Taiohae and is open every single sunday.

Taiohae is home to more than half of the 3,000 inhabitants of Nuku Hiva and is as active as the Marquesas can be. Taipivai Valley is majestic against the bay of Comptroller and offers spectacular vistas of the east side of Nuku Hiva. From Taiohae a 40-minute cruise takes you to the starting point of the Hakaui Valley.

The highest cascading waterfalls in Polynesia are located somewhere in this low basin, protected by the characteristic basalt summits of the Nuku Hiva. Right when you thought Nuku Hiva couldn't get any more amazing, your 4X4 will meander through the passes and Hatiheu Bay will appear for the first time.

One of the most famous places of the Marquesas Islands is the sea. There' old archaeological places, and then there are the ones in Nuku Hiva. This is probably because there were once lived in this part of the island thousand of people.

You may be the only ones here if you get here before sundown, and things can get unbelievably weird in these myths. When you are with Alvane from the Pension Koku'u, he may show you how sacrifice was made in the old days and welcome you to his island with a traditional dancing game!

While landing on the smooth sands, greet the few natives who are living in this isolated part of the already isolated island. Float on the only one of the reefs in Nuku Hiva or surf the wave like in your youth. Main activities in Nuku Hiva.
