Protected area water bodies provide assistance to some of the most diverse sea creatures in the protected area system, which includes a large number of corals and other invertebrate animals, fish, tortoises, sea cetaceans and seaweeds.

Guests and local people can take advantage of leisure pursuits such as scuba-dive, snorkelling, boat trips and angling in the water. By 2012, NOAA has extended the reserve beyond the initial 0.25 sq. m. of Fagatele Bay core and now the six areas that make up the reserve span over 13,500 sq. m. of the near-shore and open sea area.

Some of these extra areas included Fagalua/Fogama'a bay (the nearest cove just west of Fagatele) on Tutuila Island, as well as areas at Aunu' u, Ta' u and Swains Island and a sea reserve at Rose Atoll (known as Muliava by the Manu' a inhabitants) which includes the Vailulu' u Seamount area.
