Argentina & Chile Two Month Itinerary

Chile and Argentina are best together. Because of its closeness and the length of the crossing from east to west, it is most effective to zigzag through the two states. It will be very useful if you arrive in Patagonia, where the area will cover both lands, and due to the isolation and the expensive prices, travelling back and forth can be more than necessary.

From the Atacama deserts to the island of Easter Island, through the Iguazu Fall rainforest and the snow-covered Patagonia mountains, all in one route. What are you going to Argentina and Chile for? Chile has the famed Atacama deserts in the northern hemisphere, which is the place with the brightest starry skies in the hemisphere, the Torres del Paine Nationalpark in the south and Easter Island in the south.

There are Iguazu Falls in the northern part of Argentina and many different places in Patagonia in the southern part. Combining these two lands, you'll get one of the best travels you'll ever have, from tropic to snow-covered, from island to deserts, which you can wish for more.

Patagonia (south of Chile and Argentina) is in high seasons from November to March and although it is not a poor concept to come at this point to maximise the chances of good wheather, you also have to cope with the masses of people and the overbooking of busses and touring.

Avoiding the crowds is best during the mid-season from October to November, when the crowds are small and you can enjoy the wonderful springscape. Easter Island is the best period from the end of January to mid-February, as the yearly Tapati Festivals take place with performances and shows all over the island.

In the Iguazu cases, February to March is the best period, as the waters are still quite high and the skies are usually clear. During this period it can be quite wet, but you will immediately get cold as you approach the waterfalls. Anytime between September and March is good for the Atacama deserts, but be sure to be in Atacama on those lunarless evenings to see the star.

Argentinia and Chile are not low-cost destinations, so busses are the ideal choice for long haul travel. Turbus and Pullman offer a wide selection of busses for Chile, covering many of the most famous places. There are great opportunities for long-haul flights for Argentina, Andesmar or ViaBariloche, while for inland flights I would suggest Aerolineas Argentinas for their cost and cover.

The Entel-SIMcard in Chile is also very good on Easter Island and in Patagonia. Argentina, on the other side, is a rather blended state. Claro's web works well in big towns like Buenos Aires, but in Patagonia 60% of the times it didn't work and in El Chalten there is no beacon.

Consumers can estimate that they will pay around 45-65 US$ per man per day for meals, lodging and transport. When you come from Bolivia, San Pedro de Atacama is the place where you will find the best place to find your way around Chile, so take your first walk across the marketplace and in the evenings by bicycle and ride up the Valle de la Luna for a nice sundown.

You' ll be back in the afternoons so you can take some relaxing hours. On the last part of the trip you will take a full excursion to Lagunas Altiplanicas, the Chilean side of the area. It was one of the most real experiences in Chile to see the hand of the dessert, an artistic creation constructed in the heart of the Atacama deserts, but it was not so simple to come here.

First, you have to settle in Antofagasta, where you have to hire a vehicle and leave the town for 30 min to see the mural. When you are in Antofagasta on weekends, you can take a full days trip, which includes a hand and observation trip.

The Serena is the second oldest Chilean village, only the second oldest after Santiago and here you can enjoy 3 nights of exploration of the La Serena area. During the first you' ll be spending some time discovering the old part of La Serena, followed by a relaxing holiday on the sea, and on the last you' ll be able to go on a full excursion to discover the wonderful natural surroundings of the Elqui River basin.

The Valparaiso is known for its colourful streets and this is what you should do all your daily in the town. In Santiago is one of the most secure capitals of South America and one of my favourite places. For a few get-togethers in the local museums, you can learn about Chile's rich past and discover the city's night life.

The Easter Island is the climax of my journey in Chile. You can do many things on this small island, such as a tour of Father Sebastian Englert's Anthropological Museum to discover the story of Rapanui, the Orongo Craters, Ahu Tongariki for the best dawn of your lifetime, Rano Raraku, where all the moon minds were made, Anakena Beaches for a relaxed bath in the early mornings, and if you are there in late January, go to the Tapati Fest and savour the local people's dancing and dancing.

Hire a quads and discover the island at your leisure. There' are many other experiences from angling to Huerquehue National Park, so if you're looking for an experience, you'll find it here. The Bariloche is like a small Argentine Switzerland.

It is situated on a nice lakeshore with many hills surrounding the town, so natural that I would suggest you go upstairs. Or you can drive across Lago Nahuel Huapi, see the Black Glacier, discover the ancient volcanic caverns or just stroll through the centre of the town and see why it is like Switzerland.

Walk to a viewpoint 30 mins from El Chalten and observe the sun set or stay 8-10 hrs on the Laguna de los Tres Trail to experience the Fitz Roy summit up-close. Overnight at the foot of the trails and walk to the lakeside to see Fitz Roy in peace.

Take a full days trip to see the Perito Moreno Crecier and enjoy a relaxing stay in the wild. When you have one more full working days, you can also do a glacial hike on the Perito Moreno Icecave. The Puerto Natales is a departure point for Torres del Paine Parc.

This town itself is nothing to boast about, so I suggest you go directly to the NP. If you have the opportunity, the W-Trek through Torres del Paine Nationalpark is very recommendable. The round will take 4-5 working nights and you will sleep in the mountains.

When you cannot make your reservation in advance, you can walk to the Paine Cordillera and see the best of Torres del Paine without spending the night. And if not, you can enjoy a full days in Tierra del Fuego in the middle of the unique area.

Next you can take a relaxing trip by ferry to the lighthouse Les Eclaireurs and enjoy a full night of refreshing meals in the town of Ushuaia. Argentina's capitol is Buenos Aires, and most capitals come with many things to keep you occupied for a few extra nights.

Now, back from Patagonia, you can indulge in the Argentinean meat in one of the many restaurants in San Telmo, get to know Argentina's nationwide dancing movements, the tango, or the nation's rich cultural heritage by going to the many local art galleries, such as the Falkland Islands War Memorial and the Museum of World Heritage.

Or you can take a trip to the La Boca area and take a picture of yourself in the colourful townhouses. Finally, you can take a night coach or, if you are fortunate enough to find a low-cost plane, take a plane to the Iguazu Falls and explore the Argentine side of the cases for a whole afternoon and another one on the other.

As each side has its own view of this wonder of the earth, I strongly advise you to discover both sides. When you have an additional days, you can remain on the Brasilian side and take a chopper trip to really appreciate the size of the Iguazu Falls.
