The Walker familiy tackles Great Barrier Rat together

Nature protection is a part of the Walker familiy on Great Barrier Island. Ari, Alison Walker's grandchild, is only 3 years old at ½, but he is already making his contribution. For at least part of the year, three generation of Alison's parents are living together in Great Barrier, among them Nick, his wife Nick, his wife and grandchild Zephyr, 8 years old, who goes to the village elementary and Ari, who is three years old.

Allison and Brian together with Nick, Samantha and two buddies Andrew and Ken purchased the 33 hectares of land in 2005, but had often trampled around the Great Barrier before. It is Alison's belief that it took her 5 to 7 years before her whole life to think about it. Unfortunately, Alison's land is encircled by land on which no predators are fought, which is partly due to missing possession.

So, when a group of rat are slaughtered, they move in more. Allison ascribes a large part of the results of her work to Stuart Farquhar. They learned a great deal more about their country. Auckland Council recognizes Alison's unwavering commitment to fighting predators on the Great Barrier.

Rat numbers are still being caught and intoxicated - 60 last March (out of 40 in 2016) and 90 in April (out of 60 in 2016). "There is one trait among us that D-Block (diphacinone) has released this year," says Alison. "My next step is to urge more homeowners to choose insect repellent.

Not only the removal of mammals is beneficial for nature protection, but also some unexpected findings. "The strangest thing this year was a rodent we trapped in our vehicle. There was a hawk ish tattooed wooden boat rattie with rose-eyed. This was definitely a boat rat - she had a twice as long cock and a slim head," Alison states.

Pets are a species of Norway dog - including albuminos - so this marine dog was a natural looking albumino and not a carcass. "John Ogden, a pensioned professor of ecology who has been living on the island for years, says he's never seen one before," says Alison.
