The program does not take place on public holidays. South Dakota has marked the second Monday in October since 1990 as Native Americans Day, an official state holiday.

Hawaii honours King Kamehameha every June 11th

King Kamehameha V. in 1871 instituted June 11 as a nationwide feast in honor of his great-grandfather, King Kamehameha I, who built the United Kingdom of Hawaii through a succession of strategic triumphs and coalitions with other Ali'i Islands or sovereigns between the end of the 1790' and 1810'. Hawaii became the fiftieth state in the United States in 1959, Kamehameha Day was one of the first holidays declared by the government's governors and legislators.

Today, the national day on which King Kamehameha is honoured is celebrated with flower processions - among them the celebrated Pa'u or adorned horsemen who represent each of the islands -, ly rituals, tula feasts and other festivities. As an example, various organisations present LIE decoration on the famed King Kamehameha sculpture opposite the Iolani Palace in Honolulu - the one shown in the opening assembly of the Hawaii Five-O TV show.

King David of Hawaii Kal?kaua devoted this sculpture in 1883, but some folks may not recognize that there are several other similar or similar sculptures - each of them was also recognised on King Kamehameha Day and often throughout the year: There is one in Kapa'au near the ruler's birth place in the north of K?hala on the island of Hawaii.

In fact, this was the first sculpture to be poured and was intended to take its place opposite Iolani Square, but it was momentarily abandoned by ship near the Falkland Islands. However, the funds from the insurer paid for the refilling of another copy of the originals in England, which was then sent to Hawaii.

Falklanderers have rediscovered the ancient sculpture that now resides on the Great Island. The third King Kamehameha sculpture was ordered when Hawaii attained state status and was revealed in 1969 in the US Capitol, where it was exhibited alongside Hawaii's other prestigious statues (Father Damien of Molokai) in the statuary hall.

However, soon after US President Barack Obama was first appointed in 2008, the King Kamehameha was taken to a more prestigious location in the emancipation hall in the new Capitol Visitors' Centre. In the Wailoa River State Recreation Area in Hilo, a forth piece of statuary honors the monarch's root.

It is interesting that Princeville Corp. hired it in 1963 for their Kauai residence, but the islanders did not want it to be built there because King Kamehameha never captured Garden lsland (he won contract with King Kaumuali'i of Cauai). This Big Iceland sculpture was sponsored by the Kamehameha Schools Alumni Association, East Hawaii Chapter.

Built and inaugurated in 1997. - Herb Kawainui Kane, the deceased Hawaiian painter, also designed a smaller Kamehameha Kings sculpture, which now resides near the Grand Wailea Resort Hotel and Spa in Maui. This is supposed to be the most realistic depiction of the kings life, in comparison to the more Latin or rather Euro style of some of the others.

And, last but not least, a 6th edition of the sculpture can be seen in the Hawaii marketplace on "the strip" in Las Vegas. King Kamehameha Day was still a public festival after the fall of the Hwaiian monarchy in 1893, but without it. As Hawaii became US territory (1898), Prince Kuhio re-established the Royal Order of Kamehameha, founded the ceremony in 1904 and watched it in private until 1912, when the Order began to cooperate with other organisations.

In the end this resulted in the contemporary observations of holidays on each of the island and the more isolated places. Soon after the year 1819, shortly after the passing of Kamehameha I, Manoa also declared that his immediate followers toppled the old hoodoo or Tabu and religion that had determined people's everyday life for hundreds of years.
