From a strict point of view Stewart Island is not part of the South Island, but the third biggest island of New Zealand. It' s a rare visit by the first New Zealand tourist. It is a paradise for birdwatching, angling, hiking and canoeing. New Zealand's biggest city, Greymouth, is the turning point for the TranzAlpine Airport from Christchurch, and also a historic area around the old goldmines.
