Activities in Viti Levu

Not many travellers are disillusioned with the miracles of the north side of Viti Levu. The Wainibuka River, once known as the Banana Highway, is a small hilly street that meanders along it because the Fijians used to drive their harvests to Suva on one-way bibilifts made of upholstery.

The relatively arid weather attracts anyone who wants to capture a few beams - so many beams that today's property designers call this the "sunny coast". Municipal Anglo Fiji family estimated the drought long before the development team came, and some purchased lands and constructed holiday houses, especially on the undulating island of Nananu-I-Ra, off the most northern point of the large island.

The Yaqara Estate, Fiji's biggest beef farm covering 6,800 hectares, was built by one team. The oxen still care for their cows, but the area is now best known for Fiji water, which comes from Fiji wells in the upper part of the hill above the farm. There is a permanent truck march along the King's Road, either transporting Fiji water to Lautoka harbour and from there especially to the United States, or returning empty boxes for more.

Throughout World War II, US troops constructed a runway near the Fiji town of Rakiraki, the head office from which Viti Levus Nordspitze got its name. Aerodrome is long gone, but the enchanting motel they visited is still in the shop. Today the Tanoa Rakiraki is the last accommodation from Fiji's time.

As the English Fijians before them, today's sun-seekers are drawn to a small promontory near Rakiraki, to the island of Nananu-I-Ra and for scuba dives on the coastal islets. Because of the predominant trade wind between Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, this is also the Fiji wind surfing capitol - or windsurf kite, the latest variation of this arm-building game.

In spite of the mangrove elsewhere, Volivoli Point, the most northern end of the island, has one of Fiji's most beautiful shores. It is a long way from Rakiraki to Fiji, and since there is no longer an airfield up here, you have to drive by road or coach back and forth along the King's Road.
