The Vanua Levu, or âbig country of the people,â is the second biggest of the Fiji Islands. Though far fewer visitors than the neighbouring Viti Levu, there is still much to do and see and one can move away from the mobs. Approximately 20% of Fiji's total inhabitants (approx. 130,000 people) live in Vanua Levu.
Most of the Vanua Levu people are concentrated in the cities of Savusavu and Labasa. Its north-western part is dryer than the Savusavu area. It is home to a number of watercourses, among them Wailevu, Labasa and Qawa. One of Fiji's most beautiful cities, Savusavu is situated along the beautiful Savusavu Bay with its beautiful seafront and sandy beaches.
This is the most favourite area among tourists to the isle. It is an important ferry point of passage to other archipelagos such as Taveuni and Koro, so it is a great place to visit if you want to get to know even more secluded isles. For a long time Savusavu was known as the major crossroads of coir trading in Fiji.
It is the biggest of Vanua Levu's cities and an important crossroads for Fiji's diabetes business. Wasavula Ceremonial Site is the most important touristic site in Labasa, situated in the South. Mighty Vanua Levu be worth a trip? The second biggest of the Fiji Islands, Vanua Levu is much less crowded than the neighbouring Viti Levu.
This is where you can enjoy Fiji's old-fashioned rural lifestyle. It is the perfect place if you are looking for a lot of space and walking. At the same embankment the islands also have nice coves, picturesque cities and good transport connections. On the northern bank of Vanua Levu is one of the longest barriere coral cliffs in the whole word, a real attraction for scuba-diving.
