The Marlborough Region - Map, photos and information
Picton, Marlborough Sounds, Queen Charlotte Park, Mt Richmond Forest Park, Marlborough Wineretrail, Blenheim..... Located on the tip of South Island, Marlborough is one of New Zealand's most sunny areas. It is also the country's top of the range vineyard and some major international names such as Montana and Corbans have their vines here.
The largest city in the area, Blenheim is an ideal starting point for those interested in one of the many tastings. The next two largest cities are Picton and Havelock. The Interisland ferries between the North and South Islands arrive and depart from Picton.
Interisland Cruise takes you through the picturesque Marlborough Sounds, a net of vast waters with small isles. A few of the sounds are over 60 km long. Interisland ferryboats run through Queen Charlotte Sound, one of three large canals. You can visit houses and some rain forest vistaside the waters from the boat.
Sound is the sound of drowning valley and should not be mistaken with the fjords of Fiordland, which are drowning glacial depression. Queen Charlotte is a very favourite stroll and shows the best of Marlborough Sounds. The hike lasts three to four nights, and if it is too long, you can take part of the route.
