In the 1970', the authorities took action against those who had overstayed their visa, especially the Pacific Islanders. By 2011, about 8% of New Zealand's Pacific origin populations and more than half of New Zealand's assistance went to the Pacific. Ancients of M?ori came to New Zealand from Polynesia around 1250-1300.

Pacific whalers began visiting New Zealand in the early eighteenth and in the nineteenth centuries many policy makers spoke out in favour of the colonisation of the Pacific Islands. Following Germany's withdrawal from the Pacific during the First World War, Western Samoa came under New Zealand overlordship. In 1929, New Zealand responded strongly by detaining Mau followers and shooting a non-violent demonstration and murdering at least nine Samoans.

Later, however, in 1962, New Zealand promoted Samoa's independence. In 1901 the Cook Islands and Niue became New Zealand's first Pacific settlements. The Cook Islanders and Niueans stayed New Zealanders. In 1925 Tokelau came under New Zealand oversight. It was a dependant area in 2012. The people of Tokelau are New Zealand nationals.

Fiji began supplying raw sugars to New Zealand plants in the nineteenth and eighteenth centuries. After a number of coup d'états in 1987, 2000 and 2006, New Zealand was engaged in experiments to stabilize Fiji. New Zealand forces were sent to Tonga in 2006 following the Nuku'alofa unrest, and in 2010 King George Tupou V approved new Democracy Agreements.

New Zealand ministers were working in Melanesia in the nineteenth cen. New Zealand forces were fighting the Japanese in the Solomon Islands during the Second World War. During the 1990s, New Zealand assisted in brokering a Bougainville settlement. Following a military coup in the Solomon Islands in 2000, New Zealanders tried to solve the crises and joined a multi-national troop in the Solomon Islands from mid-2003.
