Caikoura (; M?ori: "Kaik?ura", by "Te Ahi Kaik?ura a Tama ki te Rangi") is a city on the eastern shore of New Zealand's South Island and is situated on State Highway 1, 180 km northern of Christchurch.... Kaikoura's infrastructures were severely affected by the 2016 Kaikoura seismic event, which claimed two lives in the region.

Between 1853 and 1876 Kaikoura was administered as part of the province of Nelson. The Kaikoura district was founded in 1876. Kaikoura Peninsula stretches southwards of the city into the ocean, and the resulting buoyancy current brings a wealth of ocean creatures from the deeps of the Hikurangi Rift.

This is the reason why the city has its origins, as it has become a center of the fishing industries. Kaikoura has become a favourite travel spot, especially for spotting whales (sperm whales are perhaps the best and most advanced in the world) and swim with or near them.

A large and well watched settlement of Mediterranean seal colonies can also be found on the east outskirts of the city. Seaward Kaikoura Hills, a part of the South Alps, are located at this point on the coastline and almost reach the ocean. The Mt Fyffe Trail is a frequent tourist trail that leads up Mt Fyffe and offers a scenic panorama of the Kaikoura Peninsula from the top.

The Kaikoura county has a total area of 2,046 hectares. The area is 41 km (790. 12 qm mi) and an approximate total of 3,710 residents, including other inhabited places in the county (except Kaikoura): Situated on State Highway 1 and the north of the South Island Main Trunk Railway.

The Kaikoura also has a small runway which is 6 km southern of the center. Kaikoura Airport is mainly used for observation of tourists flying with whales, but can also be used for small privately chartered planes. The Kaikoura is serviced by the long-distance line of the coastal Pacific, formerly TranzCoastal, which links the city with Christchurch in the southern part, Picton and the Cook Strait in the northern part.

The Kaikoura was the last stop in New Zealand to have a passenger snack room, which was shut down in 1988 when the Coastal Pacific Express (formerly TranzCoastal) launched refresh services on toboard. Goods train services also run through the city and mainly transport goods between the shunting stations at Middleton in Christchurch and the Interislander railway boats at Picton.

In November 2016, the Picton to Christchurch line (via Kaikoura) was damaged by the quake and shut down for repair. On September 15, 2017, the line was reopened for goods transport. The Kaikoura has three local FM radios. They are More FM Marlborough (formerly Sounds FM), which are broadcasted during the days from Blenheim and at nights from Auckland, Blue FM, a local Kaikoura channel, and Tahu FM, which broadcasts from Christchurch.

Breeze (Wellington AM/FM), Radio New Zealand National (Wellington AM/FM), ZM (Wellington und Christchurch FM), Radio Hauraki (Christchurch). Commons Wikimedia has related to Kaikoura related news medium. Vikivoyage has a tour leader for Kaikoura.
