Why is Easter Island Famous
What is Easter Island famous for?For a long time, many scientists have thought that the island's intricate road system was specially constructed 800 years ago to carry the mai. On the back of the car, faces and sculptures near the streets were left behind during the journey. However, archaeologists with University College London and the University of Manchester said on Wednesday that the streets were mainly constructed for ceremony use.
This enabled them to make underground cards indicating that the sculptures had not been given up but had fallen off the platform over the years. Scientists also point to earlier excavation sites where the streets are concaved, making it hard to move heavier items along the highways. We will never know how the sculptures were moved," said Richard in the publication.
"We now know that the streets had a solemn role in underlining their importance in religion and culture. From different parts of the island they take you to the Rano Raraku vulcano, where the mai were mined. Volcanic peaks were regarded as points of entrance into the underground and the mythic country of Hawaiki."
When the streets near the Rano Raraku cones, the sculptures become more common. "Everything makes sense: The mai are facing the humans approaching the volcano," Hamilton said in a press brief. "which must be a sign of their growing importance."
