The Solomon Islands are one of the ten most biodiverse islands in the hemisphere, with lush rain forests, jagged peaks, fresh water streams, mangrove and reef. Solomon Islands are part of the'Coral Triangle' with the highest maritime diversity on Earth and what many today call the'Amazon of the Sea'.
Solomon Islanders from the countryside are living an ecological mixture of tradition and modernity. The majority are subsidised growers and fishers - they grow their own produce, fish and sell what they also have as a surpluses on their own market. There are no streets, no phones, no shopping malls, no electric power, very low consumption and little regional population.
But despite the shortage of amenities, these municipalities are well organized, offer their own service, run nice towns and have a very wealthy and multi-cultur. The locals know and use their surroundings - their woods, their lands, their gardens, they know their coral and their sea. They' re pretty, chilly and convenient.
Towns vary from remote towns to man-made islets. Whilst this wonderful setting and abundant cultural heritage is intriguing for us as outcasts, the locals face many different kinds of outreach. Shortages of service, such as very poor quality of life and healthcare, and the difficulties associated with access to municipal market places mean that there is very little income in the form of bar.
Solomons are striving to make their life better.
