Whakaari Island is 49 km from Whakatane and is one of the most open volcanoes in the whole worInd. The largest part of this geologic giants is under the sea, but the 321 metre high peak rises above the sea and forms a round island, which is about 2 km high. His Maori name, Whakaari, means "the Drama Volcano".

Later it was called White Island by Captain James Cook during his 1769 journey because it always seemed to be cloudy. You can still see surging vapor from the White Island chimney along the entire Eastern Bay of Plenty coast on a clear sunny outing.

Visits are offered seven times a day from Whakatane. Unwind on board a luxurious takeoff or enjoy the excitement of a brief heli trip to White Island, where you will be spending up to two hrs walking the inner craters to learn more about its geology as well.
