I' m sure the doctor wouldn't know what he'd have gotten himself into if he'd landed his fleet on Lanai at some point in all this. It is said that wicked ghosts ruled the small Island of Hawaii early on before Maui's exiled prince Kaulalaau found a way to excorcise them. Mystical, robust and largely underdeveloped, Lanai is the dark lamb of Hawaii's archipelago, with a varied and often rough story packed together in its miniscule 20 km x 30 km framework.

It is the un-Hawaiian isle of all, but probably the most interesting and has recently developed back into a private insular luxurious retreat. There are two very different Four Seasons homes that allow visitors to "resort" between the top of the islands and the coves. The Lodge at Koele, one is challenging, classy and immersed in the wild.

Another is on the beach at Hulopo'e Beach in Manele Bay. This is the predicament for every ambitioned traveler. However, instead of travelling through history, the more conventional way to reach Lanais Ufer is by boat from the port of Lahaina, Maui. It is only a 45-minute drive and just after the start there were many humpbacks, fractures and tailbeats near and far, while a group of long-beaked whales materialized from ripples like sea virgins as we approached Lanai's coast.

Upon your arriving, you will be greeted by lofty, steep rocks and close-ups of Pu'u Pehe, also known as Sweetheart Rock, a romantic hotspot and one of the most celebrated lanai monuments of nature, and the great exponent of the Four Seasons Resort Lanai in Manele bay. After putting aside the bait of a first beach stop until the end of the weeks, I drove directly to the top of the hill to The Lodge in Koele, a 20-minute coach trip almost 500m above sealevel and about 10°C colder than his fellow hotel down by theulf.

Extensive marine landscapes are slowly disappearing from sight before huge Cook Island and Norfolk pine forests dominate the country and the lodge landscaped garden, which includes bamboos, palms and orchards, is lined with a hectare of green landscape. Enter the lodge and its abundance and grandeur is overwhelming. Failing that (ahem), less sophisticated people (that would be me) may choose to stand back with a cool Hwaiian ale or Mai Tai in their hands while visiting the concert room or the bar next to the arches. Dining here is high-end and painstakingly reworked from the ground up, whether European-founded US celebrations for a sovereign in the spacious dining room and less fancy but no less classy terrace, or some tasty homemade traditional local products in tasty dolls available all days in either the bar or the Great Hall.

To ensure the consistency that the dining experience takes you all the way down to Manele Bay Estate. In Manele there is also the only spas on the islands, a tranquil haven where you can indulge yourself in a small spoiling programme in the Hawai-like atmosphere. Perhaps the most challenging thing to do during a sojourn at Four Seasons is to discover yourself.

Koele is surrounded by highlands with hills and luxuriant greenery, forested hillsides, well-kept shelters and terraced pools, while the challenge of Manele Bay lies on rocks of rocky rock high above the crackling waves of Hulopo'e Bay with three cavities on rocks that use the Pacific Ocean as a bar.

Walk inland near Koele and the colder weather offers a completely different atmosphere for adventures. 4x4 is a favourite way to explore the jagged countryside up to the Gods' Gardens, a moonscape that presents itself as an afterlife' stone park, and there are many trails, woodland strolls, the powerful Munro Trail and the possibility of sounding, arching, UTV adventures or Horseback Horseriding.

Although Manele Bay is only 20 min. away, it is much warm. This also means you can go surfing, paddling, snorkel/sail cruising to some of the world' s most colorful marine life in the vicinity of Hulopo'e Beach, or take a walk to Sweetheart Rock and watch cetaceans.
