Norfolk Island Airlines Australia
United States Norfolk Island Airlines AustraliaOriginally used for bomb patrol and transportation to Bougainville Island, the airport was never used as an important airfield and became a stop-over for planes flying between Australia, New Caledonia, New Zealand and the Solomon Islands. Royal New Zealand Air Force evacuated the airport in July 1946.
On the airport there was an air-sea emergency medical team, a maintenance department and a speed camera on Mount Bates. The Norfolk Island International Airport is an important hub for the transportation and refuelling of lightweight aircrafts between Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. Kaitaia Airport is the northernmost airport in New Zealand with 460 nm / 852 km to the southeast; Noumea Airport in New Caledonia with 407 nm / 754 km to the north and Lord Howe Island Airport with 323 nm / 600 km to the north.
This is in the area of many lightweight planes if they are equipped with long-range fuel cells, while the immediate proximity, without using Norfolk Island as a springboard, is usually beyond their capability. Other Pacific islands such as Vanuatu and Fiji are within easy reach from New Caledonia and can be used as further'springboards' to the other South Pacific and North Pacific locations.
Norfolk Air discontinued its Gold Coast and Hamilton, New Zealand service in 2008. In the NF FIS area (30 NM radi NF array, 0-9500') the QNH area is maintained. With NF, the arft LTDG and TKF use the QNH apt. RSTD24 h PN for Non-Sked-Acft.
