Samoan Islands Travel

We' ve chosen to travel from New Zealand to Samoa, which is relatively near (about 3000 km), but we've still bought almost 600 NZD for a flight back. The best thing for you is to visit the web sites of all the companies that are flying to the islands and try to find the best offers!

From Auckland we walked 3.5 hrs to Faleolo International Airfield on the island of Upolu in Samoa. Arriving at the highway, many cabbies offered us a trip to the capitol Apia. All of us turned it down, although it wasn't simple, and we went on until we got to a small store.

The Big Samoan Ladyship didn't seem to have many things in her store, but as we later discovered, it was one of the best stores on the Isle. "She answered in English fluently, as English and Samoan are the main language of Samoa. "We drank a few pints while we talked to the woman and asked her a few words about the isle.

We were asked if it was okay to stay in her fale, a classical Samoan home with open sides and straw top, and almost everyone in Samoa has it next to the townhouse. So we stayed our first overnight on the whole thing. Right from the start we began to interact with very kind and welcoming locals.

The Samoa is made up of 2 major islands: When you have more free travel you can also travel to American Samoa, which is part of the USA. The journey between the major islands is easily by inexpensive boat. These islands are quite small, so that you can circumnavigate them in a few short outings. There were 5 working hours to travel on each of the islands and it was enough to see the most important things without having to hurry.

To get as near as possible to the locals and we did it! Hitch hiking in Samoa is very simple because there is only one major street around each of the islands and you will find many different lorries that almost always stop to help you. Things on the isle are a little slow and there is no haste.

There are also busses that circumnavigate the islands. They' re very inexpensive, but sometimes overcrowded, especially when you travel with schoolchildren. The best time in Samoa was not the nice beach or waterfall. To us they were the amazing humans. The Samoans never wavered to help us, and they always asked us into their houses and let us make our shelters there.

All of us stayed in Samoan homes, except last Saturday evening when we all got horrible diarrhea and were paying for Fale to have a regular bathroom on the sands. We were fortunate to see the Samoan way of living because all the activity took place in people's homes. You have to buy all the caverns in Samoa for the visit of touristic places like waterfalls, because they are in private ownership.

One of the most expansive was the entry to the island of Samoa's major tourist attractions, the To Sua Ocean Tee (20 Tala / 12 NZD). Guests visiting the Sua Ocean tend to dive into the tall waters from the end of the ladders. As we arrived, we had to await a flood because there was not more than 2 metres of ditching.

The headmaster of the samoan language institute showed us the grades and Kata with Edita began to educate small samoan children. Students have lessons in Samoan and English. The English language is very important for communication with tourists and for the general evolution of the isle. It is also interesting how Samoa functions as a state.

It is the chieftain who looks after the town and lays down the regulations for the population there. We' ve always felt very secure in Samoa. The Samoans are very sectarian and all gather in Sunday morning in the school. It' beautiful to go to the chapel to see them all sing in plain sight.

We' ve shown you that a paradise in the Pacific and that you can travel differently and cheap! You' ll not have the same Samoan island smiles when you only spend the night at your hotel's private outdoor pools.
