Ralph Wiltgen founded the Roman Catholic Church in Melanesia and Micronesia between 1850 and 1875 as a consequence of many years of archive work in Rome and at the head office of the orders active in Micronesia and Melanesia. This is followed by his first historic work on the topic, The Foundation of the Roman Catholic Church in Oceania: 1825 to 1850, but narrowing the scope.

Mikronesia is a vast area of the globe, made up of many atoll groups, which vary in cultural and political terms and extend over approximately 1,400 kilometres from the north-west to the south-east. Wiltgen is the indisputable champion of the archive of the Propaganda Fide, the main missionary office of the Vatican and the orders that provided for the misionaries. This is complemented by his awareness of the life of this time.
