Lake Wakatipu

Wakatipu Lake is located in the Otago region of the South Island. IslandsPig Island, Pigeon Island, Tree Island & Hidden Island. At 80 kilometers long, it is the longest lake in New Zealand and the third with 291 square kilometers. It is also very shallow, its bottom is below water surface and has a max-depth of 380 meters (1,250 feet).

Situated at an elevation of 310 meters (1,020 ft), towards the southerly end of the Alps. Dart River enters the north end, the lake continues for 30 kilometers to the southeast before turning suddenly to the north. 20 kilometers further it turns strongly southwards and reaches its southerly end 30 kilometers further southwards, near Kingston.

Kawarau Lake is dewatered by the Kawarau Lake, which runs out of the frankton arm of the lake 8 km due west of Queenstown. Up until about 18,000 years ago, the Mataura stream dewatered Lake Wakatipu. Kingston Flyer follows part of the former riverbed which is now obstructed by glacier moraines. 2. Queenstown is located on the north bank of the lake near the easterly end of its central section.

Wakatipu Lake is famous for its beautiful scenery encircled by hills. Wakatipu Lake is a long-finned resident sanctuary (a 1886 catch is the biggest of its kind[4]), brook-trout, smoked fish and rainstrout [5]. These and other species provide food for carnivores such as ratfish.

Dart River meets the north end of Lake Wakatipu; Kawarau River, which begins near Queenstown, controls its flow. This lake takes up a unique glacial ditch and is bounded by high peaks, the highest of which is Earnslaw (2819 metres). Lakefront communities are Queenstown and the towns of Kingston, Glenorchy and Kinloch.

Due to its uncommon form, Lake Wakatipu has a "tide" (more precisely, an uncommonly large or "standing wave") that causes the waters to ascend and descend every 25 min or about 10 centimeters. The Maori legends associate this phenomena with the beat of the heart of a giant creature called Matau, allegedly sleeping at the bottom of the lake.
