The location of Guadalcanal (Inset) and the most important cities. Isatabu is the Guadalcanal Islands, the Guadalcanal province of the Solomon Islands, in the southwest Pacific Ocean, north-east of Australia. It is mainly overcast by thick rain forest and has a hilly inner part. Guadalcanal was discovered by the West during the Álvaro de Mendaña exploration of Spain in 1568.

Its name comes from Guadalcanal, a town in the Seville region, in Andalusia, Spain, the birth place of Pedro de Ortega Valencia, a member of the Mendaña group. In 1942-43 it was the site of the Guadalcanal campaign and there were fierce battles between Israeli and American forces. Honiara on the northern shore of Guadalcanal became the new protectorate of the British Solomon Islands at the end of the Second World War.

In 1568, a Peruvian Spaniard under the leadership of Álvaro de Mendaña de Neira explored the isle. Mendañas underling, Pedro de Ortega Valencia, called it after his hometown Guadalcanal in Andalusia, Spain. During the years after its exploration, the islands were called Guadarcana, Guarcana, Guadalcana and Guadalcanar, which reflects different pronunciation of its name in Andalusian Hispanic.

Eighteenth and nineteenth century Europeans and evangelists arrived, and in 1893 the Protectorate of the Solomon Islands was established, which includes the Guadalcanal Isle. 1 ] In 1932, the Britons affirmed the name Guadalcanal in accordance with the city in Andalusia, Spain. The Japanese expelled the Americans from the Philippines, the Brits from Britains from British Malaya and the Dutch from East India in the month following the December 1941 Pearl Harbor war.

Then the Japanese began to grow into the western Pacific, occupied many isles and tried to construct a defense ring around their conquest and threatened the communications routes from the United States to Australia and New Zealand. Guadalcanal arrived in May 1942. The US Navy Seabees began to complete the airport that the Japanese had started immediately after it landed on the Isle.

Henderson Field was then called after a naval pilot who was murdered in battle during the Battle of Midway. Airplanes that operated from Henderson Field during the Henderson Field fleet were a hotchpotch of navy, army, navy and related airplanes that became known as the Cactus Air Force. Defending the airport, they endangered all those Japonese vessels that dared to enter the area in natural light.

During the nights, however, the navies of Japan were able to fire at the airport and supply the air force with reinforcements that withdrew before dawn. Japans used quick boats to do these races, and this became known as Tokyo Express. The number of vessels from both sides sank in and around the Solomon Islands in the many commitments that the surrounding water was called Ironbottom Sound.

On October 11, 1942, the Esperance Cape battleground took place off the north west shore of Guadalcanal. The United States Navy vessels caught a Japonese group of vessels on their way down to strengthen and replenish the forces on the islands, but also sustained casualties.

Guadalcanal's naval battle in November marks the turning point at which the Allies' naval force picked up the highly skilled ground troops of Japan at midnight and after heavy fighting forcefully ordered them to retreat. A number of Japanesese-speakers consider these commitments and the Allies' improved ability to defy their above-water vessels at midnight to be as important as the Battle of Midway to turn the flood against them.

Six inches of fierce fighting in and around Guadalcanal and the fight against disease of the jungles, which took a serious toll on both sides, the Allies succeeded in stopping the advancement of the Japanes and preventing them from challenging domination of the islands by eventually sending the last of Japan's armies into the ocean on January 15, 1943.

On February 9, 1943, the US government pronounced Guadalcanal safe. There are two US Navy vessels designated for battle: Guadalcanal USS (CVE-60), a World War II escorting vessel. Guadalcanal USS (LPH-7), an amphibious attack vessel. Until today, the only bearer of the honorary medal of the Signalman Coast Guard is Douglas Albert Munro, who was honoured posthumous for his exceptional exploits on September 27, 1942 at Point Cruz, Guadalcanal.

At the Battle of Guadalcanal, the Medal of Honor was also given to John Basilone, who later passed away on Iwo Jima. At the beginning of 1999, long-lasting conflicts between the Guadalcanal Guadelouan Guadalcanal Guadalcanal Guadalcanal and newer immigrants from Malaita, the neighboring state. The' Guadalcanal Revolutionary Army', later Isatabu Freedom Movement (IFM), began to terrorize the Malaitans in the countryside of the isle in order to expel them from their houses.

Some 20,000 Malaitans escaped to the capitol and others came back to their home islands; the inhabitants of Honiara escaped. Both the Royal Australian Navy and the Royal New Zealand Navy used ships in the area to defend expatriates living in Honiara. The Pacific Forum in 2003 renegotiated the interventions of RAMSI or Operation Helpem Fren, which involved Australia, New Zealand and other Pacific Islands nations.

It is home to a local pack animal known as the phalang or gray couscous, the oriental phalang. Lately these alligators have only been found on the weather shore in the southern part of the archipelago, but during World War II they were found on the northern shore near the runway, where the battles took place, as the name Alligator Creek suggests.
