Travel to Chile: Easter Island mysteries on NOVA

The Easter Island is actually a hill of solid volcanic rock and the ashes of three subsea volcanos. The island has been a place of intrigues since its "discovery" in 1722. The biggest phenomena of Easter Island are the almost 100 tons of heavy carvings of mai. There is little known about the Moai and their makers.

PBS's NOVA records some of the island's unknowns in their movie "Mystery of Easter Island" - broadcast on November 7, 2012 at 9:00 pm. Some of the researchers and the voluntary workers will test a hypothesis of how the Moai might have been moving with a 15 ton reproduction (remember - some of these sculptures weigh almost 100 tons).

Besides the question of how and why the island inhabitants of the nearly 900 Moai constructed and animated, the NOVA features are also discussed: Have[ the old islanders] turned a supposed heaven into a tree free desert that turned their island and themselves into rubble? The NOVA investigates contentious allegations that call into question decade-long considerations about the island' s inhabitants, who are reproached with everything from eco-cides to cannibalism. These allegations have been made in the past.
