Polynesians first populated the Cook Islands in the sixth millennium, emigrating from Tahiti, an isle 1154 km north-east of the Cook Islands. Pukapuka (North Islands) was first sighted by the Spaniard in 1595. In 1606 a Portugese master made the first landings on Rakahanga (northern islands) and called it Gente Hermosa (beautiful people).

In 1773 and 1777, the English sailor Captain James Cook landed and called the islands the Hervey Islands; the name "Cook Islands", in honor of Cook, appears on a Soviet nautical map released in the 1920s.
