Proofs of a hotspot origins of the Caroline Islands - Keating - 1984 - Journal of Geophysical Research: Firm Earth

Results of palaeomagnetic, petrographical and radiation-based investigations of the Eastern Carolines in the Pacific Ocean show that the islands were created by a hotspot near the palaeoequator between 1 and 11 Ma. These islands show a middle-aged line from 1 Ma in the eastern (Kusaie) to 11 Ma in the westerly (Truk).

Caroline's predominant shield-forming magma is part of a diverse alkaline group. Posterosive lava is a nephelinite with a high degree of silicic acid under-saturation and enrichment with micronutrients. Truk's geochemistry and geography is very similar to that of the Hwaiian Chains; however, the shield-forming lava is similar in composition to the alkaline lava, which on many Hwaiian volcanoes usually only forms thin late-stage canopies.

There were no Tholeiite stones found, although they were found deeply in the islands' deeply roughened vulcanic structures. While Hawaii is dominated by Tholeiite lava, this lack of Tholeiite lava and the predominance of alkaline lava is in stark opposition to Hawaii, where Tholeiite lava predominates and alkaline lava forms only a small proportion of the lava population. However, the lack of Tholeiite lava in the building stage of the shield is not unparalleled in the Caroline Islands.

The dominating alkaline volcanic activity is typical of other sea mountains in the Pacific, among them the Samoans, Austral-Cook and Line Islands.
