Pronounce Niihau
Say Niihauus. To hear how to pronounce it correctly, click here. Regarding the full conversation Hawaiian, it is rarely outside of Niihau, Molokai, and my grandfather.
Taking pictures of the islands of Hawaii
Hawaii' islets are an island of eight primordial archipelagos and many atols, which stretch over 1600 nautical mileage. Bigger and more populated isles are what we generally call Hawaii, the Fiftieth State of the United States of America. Its major isles, from eastern to western, consist of Hawaii (also known as the Great Island), Maui, Kahoolawe, Molokai, Lanai, Oahu, Kauai and Niihau.
Behind Niihau in the western part are the Atols, from Kaula to the Kure Atoll in the eastern part. Oahu, Maui, Kauai and Hawaii (Big Island) are the most frequented and highly evolved island with an infrastructural structure that corresponds to much of the civilised globe. Both Molokai and Lanai have very restricted accommodations and facilities and have much fewer population.
The six of them all provide a wealth of opportunities for photographers. The Kahoolawe and Niihau are basically taboo. The Niihau is reserved for the very few who are 100% Hawaiians and cannot, if at all, be taken photographs. Can be photographed from the south banks of Maui and Niihau can be seen from the southeast part of Kauai.
Let us avoid some real debate, as most of the inhabitants of the mainland do not pronounce the name of the isle correctly. The Oahu and Maui are the simple ones that most understand correctly - they are spoken Oh-ah-hoo and Mau-ee. The Hawaiian language is Ha-vah-ee; Kaui is Cow-ah-ee; Lanai is Lah-na-ee; Molokai is Mo-low-kah-ee; Kahoolawe is Kah-ho-oh-la-ve.
Niihau Nee-eeh-how is eventually spoken. Traveling to Hawaii from Asia, Australia and Northern America is relatively simple. The majority of large airlines depart to Oahu, Maui, Kauai and Hawaii from several large US, Australia and Asia airports every day. As a rule, Europeans and South Americans have to travel to a US airport and then take another plane to Hawaii.
The Hawaiian Airlines provide scheduled services between all visiting Icelandic destinations. You are not allowed to take fruit, vegetable or any other kind of live foods from Hawaii and you will be inspected agriculturally. All products bought when you leave Hawaii, such as pineapple, are inspected and must be approved by the Ministry of Agriculture.
There are many car rentals and hostels on Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the Big Island. Warned that eating, heating and accommodation in Hawaii can be very costly, as so much of it has to be exported to the Hawaiian isles. They should be expecting to be paying twice what you are paying for most articles in the Continent's USA, more than Lanai and Molokai.
Because of the much more directly situated solar corner, even the oldest solar worshippers from the south continent of the USA or south Europe will be burning in Hawaii all year round - always with powerful sundowners. Each of the isles that can be reached is located between the equator and the Tropic of Cancer.
At the moment, the Lee Isles or the plains beyond Niihau can only be visited as part of a research or voluntary group. Hawaii' Isles were created 70 to 100 million years ago, when the Pacific Rift Valley broke and the very first of its kind was made up of marmalade. It was the Kure Isle, which has been extinct except for a small part of a hard core under the Pacific flat.
Situated 1600 northeast of the eastern most tip of the Big Island of Hawaii. Next came the isles that we call Midway Atoll, French frigate Shoals, Necker and Nihoa in the extreme northwestern part of the artic. Niihau and Kauai are the oldest island, followed by Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Maui and Hawaii.
Generally, the archipelago was initially in the north-west and then in the south-east. While Haleakala, the major volume on Maui, has not yet been proclaimed deserted, all except Hawaii are in geological decline and erosion, so there is a chance that Maui could still expand. Hawaii, is still a young geological haven and is still strongly expanding with persistent eruption of volcanoes from the very vibrant Kilauea vulcano and its east ditch area.
The newest isle is being built and expanding in southwestern Hawaii. This will be the newest of Hawaii's archipelago in about 100,000 years and has already been called Loihi (pronounced Low-ee-hee). Hawaii' s first colonists came from the Marquesas, more than 2000 leagues southward, in the 4th or 5th centuries in hulls.
The colonists planted the country and managed it with eatable plants such as taro, today a basic foodstuff of an original Hwaiian cuisine. During the 1700s, Captain Cook explored the Islands of Hawaii on his way to Alaska when he landed on Kauai and the westernisation of the island began. Originally it was thought that Cook was a god, but over the years the Hawaiians became mistrustful.
As one of Captain Cook's supporters murdered a Hawaiian chief, Captain Cook's death ended when he was knifed several times by a hooligan. Cooke and his group are held responsible for many modernisations on the island, but also for having brought STDs, rat and other adverse cultural factors to the area.
Hawaii's most venerated character in Hawaii's story is King Kamehameha the Great. It is attributed to him that he brings the archipelago together under a common dominion, rather than each of them being under its own dominion, which often leads to conflicts between the archipelago. Hawaii has been modernised by modernising whale hunting. In the nineteenth and seventeenth centuries, whalers from all over the world followed whalers to the archipelago and began the race between them.
It was Sanford Dole who purchased much of this country, mainly the whole islanai. The United States recognised the islands of Hawaii as a supreme state under Sanford Dole, President of the Republic of Hawaii, in 1894. Then, in 1900, Hawaii became an officially registered U.S. jurisdiction and finally, in the mid-1900s, became the Fiftieth World War.
Hawaii still today makes pineapples and sugar cane, but these industry are in sharp declines and Hawaii's primary commodity is agribusiness. Hawaii' isles are a natural photography heritage. The majority of the animals you will see on the island are bird species, so if you want to take pictures of a bird, a longer objective such as a 500mm or 600mm objective is preferable.
Hawaii is a great place if you've never been to the islands and just want to see an entire country that has much of what Hawaii has to show for you. The total land mass of all other inhabited Hawaii is significantly less than that of Hawaii alone.
The sandy beach of Hawaii is sandy beach with a lot of natural grass and dark sands. Throughout Hawaii you will find rainforest, highland farmlands, falls and spitting volcanos! The only thing that will scratches the surfaces of this tiny little village is a whole weeks of firing from morning to night. Don't miss the beach and turtle sunbathing on them, the falls of the Rainbow Falls and Akaka Falls in the Hilo area and the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens just off Hilo.
At the north tip of the isle there are two stunning viewpoints - the Pololu and Waipio valleys. The Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is an unbelievable adventure, where you can see true streams of Lavastream. A prominent historic site is Pu'uhonua o Honaunau or The place of Refuge, where one can take photographs of antique Tiki against the sundown in an area where the defendants could find shelter from the tyrannic and lethal ruling nations of old Hawaii.
This large islet is a place where a flight by plane is strongly recommendable, as you can see the volcanos from the sky, flying into some water fall dales and much more. Show Big Iceland pictures by site on my website. The Maui is a photographer's paradise with unbelievable sandy beach, a wealth of side falls on the demanding Hana highway and some very interesting geologic caves.
Iao Needles in the "saddle" of the Isle ( "the low land" that links the eastern and western volcanoes) is an interesting cliff that looks like a pin. On 11,000 ft above sealevel, the temperature is up to 50°C lower than on the shore and it can be very draughty, so be sure to wear hot clothing if you plan to come here.
You' ll also find the one and only silver sword in Hawaii on the top of Haleakala - the only place on earth where this yucca-like herb is growing. At the east end of Maui is the town of Hana and just South of Hana is the beautiful Koki Strand, a sandy white sandy spot with some great crags.
La Peruse Bay is located along the west bank of the Haleakala side of the archipelago, a great place to take pictures of tidal swimming and watch often visited cetaceans. Kahoolawe and Molokini Islands are visible from here. It is also an ideal place for a non-door chopperride.
Have a look at the Maui pictures by site on my website. It is densely settled and has the most tourist. Also the east side of the isle offers many possibilities. You can also photograph Mokolii or Chinaman's Hat Islands from the east side of the Isle.
Browse the Oahu pictures by site on my website. The Kauai is the defining feature of a luxuriant paradise. The Kauai is one of the humidest places on the planet on top of its major volume, the Wai'ale'ale, which can absorb over 500 inch of rains in a year. The Waimea Canyon, also known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, is one of the high points of this isle.
The Kalalau viewpoint at the top of Waimea Canyon and the Napali coast on the north-west side of the isle are not to be miss. When you choose a chopper trip and shoot through the window, you should either be wearing all of them in blacks, long arms and long blacks to avoid reflection spoiling your photographs, or rent a chopper whose door has been taken out.
Whilst Kauai can be humid, the most western part of the islands, like all of Hawaii's islands, is much drier. The Poipu area at the south tip of the peninsula receives much less precipitation than the inland, either eastward or northerly, and offers some great possibilities for sunrises and sunsets, such as the famed Spouting Horn, where a cave spouts waters high into the sky, especially during the arrival of the tides.
Have a look at the Kauai pictures by site on my website. Much less traveled than Big Island, Maui, Oahu and Kauai, Molokai boasts some of the most stunning rocks and falls that fall into the sea by the thousand meters. The Molokai is still like Hawaii before the tourism revolutions that modernised the larger isles.
Accommodation is very confined and not up to the standard of the remainder of Hawaii, but for a professional it is a real jewel. It is easy to take pictures of this eastern to western part of the archipelago along the south shore and inside the rain forest for a whole weekend. From Maui, a Helicoptertour can take you along these rocks, which are among the most photo-perfect in the world.
In order to get good lighting on the rocks, an early or early morning flying is advisable during the high season, as the rocks face northwards and the islands are below the turning circle, which causes early and later lighting to strike the northerly rocks. The King Kamehameha's Royal Coconut Grove is situated on Molokai and the west part of the isle is home to one of the most beautiful sandy spots in the whole wide globe and there probably won't be anyone on them.
You will find yourself alone on a large part of the archipelago and will not be disturbed by others. The eastern Molokai provides some extraordinary seascapes and the Halawa River is not to be miss, not to mention the high vantage points before the descent into the valleys. Have a look at the Molokai pictures by site on my website.
The Lanai is probably the least frequently used of the occupied isles. South of the archipelago, which is home to a wonderful Four Seasons residence, there are also some very interesting scenic possibilities, accentuated by a pile of seaside photographs known as Pu'u Pehe or Sweetheart Rock. For most other areas on the Isle of Lanai, a four-wheel driven truck with high ride height is required, which can be hired either from the Four Seasons or from the only local hire company on the Isle of Lanai City in the centre of the Isle.
Another offside goal on Lanai is Keahiakawelo or Garden of the Gods. It is an area where the vulcanic past of the archipelago can be seen in a volcanically formed erratic outcrop. In the inland of the isle there are footpaths that lead the photographers into the Lanai rain forest.
Reaching the more isolated parts of Lanai requires off-road riding expertise, as you'll find some of the roughest, steepest and most hazardous riding situations most people will ever have. Lanai is the right place for submarine photography. Maui offers day diving and snorkeling charter, which will take you to all our hotspots.
Over the years, Lanai, initially in Dole' s possession and now largely privately held, has developed into a sleeping haven with only 3000 inhabitants. As Molokai, you may not always see another one on Lanai. Have a look at the Lanai pictures by site on my website. It is unlikely that a photo er can be taken from the floor, as mentioned above.
Whilst I am sure that a scenery shooter could find interesting things to photograph, they are the least interesting spots as they are low, shallow vulcanic cliffs without much flora and completely no facilities. Maui' s chopper trip and the coastline along the southwesternmost part of Maui in the mornings have the power of some remote photographs of Kahoolawe.
Same for Niihau; a heli trip or the south-western part of Kauai can provide some pictures of Niihau. A few years ago it was possible to see the three island that make up the Midway Atoll, but the government's embezzlement of the money donated by tourists to the general funding closed this incredible wealth of animal photographing area.
He is one of the few who have been to Midway, but today it is only possible to see this and other atolls as part of a science or voluntary outing. Animal imaging on the islands of Hawaii is mainly birds. The Hawaii Green Turtle is also possible, but in sharp decrease.
To the southeast of Big Island and the northern bank of Oahu are the most likely areas for tortoises. You can find the critically endangered monk seal on the lee side of the island if you can find a way there, but it is also against the law to get close to it within 150ft.
Easily found on most isles include the Crested Cardinal, Yellow-billed Cardinal, Zebra Dove, Common Myna, Pacific Golden Plover, Wandering Tattler, Black-capped Heron, Java Sparrow and Saffron Finch. A number of alien animals exist that inhabit the interior of the archipelago and are much more difficult to take photographs, even the coveted I'iwi.
Audubon Society has published the brochure "Hawaii's Birds", which is available in every bookshop on the island for further information. Without this little volume, I wouldn't have gotten busted on a visit to Hawaii. Kilauea National Wildlife Refuge at the north tip of Kauai is one of the best places to take photos of wildlife on the island.
You can take pictures of Laysan Albatros, Red-footed Booby, Hawaiians (Nene), Red-tailed Tropic Bird and many others from here. Hawaii is one of the real treasure of the earth and is great for filming. Next timeyou think about Hawaii instead of having an umbrella drinking on the shore, think of the amazing pictures you could get when you go there for a walk.
