The Swains Island History

The Natural History Guide To American Samoa. Samoa Islands On the southern side of the Ecuadorian Sea, half way between Hawaii and New Zealand, lie the wonderful Samoan Islands between the island state of Samoa - formerly West Samoa - and American Samoa, an area of the USA. Both Samoans have a shared history, cultural heritage and a shared foreign tongue, but have been ruled by separate rulers since 1900.

The most westerly place in the West until they chose to go on the International Date Line in 2011. It opted that it would make good commercial sense to coordinate more closely with its trade counterparts Australia and New Zealand. That would stop their counterparts in these lands from making Monday phone business to Samoa just to find the faithful Samoans in the midst of Sunday worship service.

Therefore, Samoa chose to jump over December 30, 2011, and the American Samoa area became the last place where the sundown of the West was. It is also possible to party twice a week, such as a birthdays, holidays or anniversaries, by gliding or taking a flight from Samoa to American Samoa and start-ahead!

By the way, this wasn't the first one that Samoa switched. In 1892, King Malietoa Laupepa was persuaded that it would be better to be in synch with America. This amendment was made by reiterating July 4, American Independence Day.

In addition to the journey through history, Samoa has much more to offer visitors. Their luxuriant tropic landscape, simplicity of living and friendliness make for an astonishing and genuine Polyynesian world. The treasure island writer Robert Louis Stevenson has made Samoa his home for the last five years of his live and is inhumed.

Until 1997 Samoa was named West Samoa, when the land chose to give up the west. It turned out to be a good concept, because in theory American Samoa later became the westernmost place in the West hemisphere....) The land became New Zealand independant in 1962. Prior to New Zealand, this part of the island was owned by Germany since 1900.

Samoa is made up of two major isles. The most populous where the capitol Apia is situated, and Savai'i, the biggest island where you can find untouched old towns, a rain forest area and an energetic-volcan. It also has some small isles, some of which are occupied.

Smaller area of Samoa is Tutuila Island, which is about 18 nautical mile long and not more than 6 nautical leagues in width, the Rosenatoll, Swains Island and the small Manu'a Islands. Samoa is the only inhabited US property just to the South of the Ecuador. Pago Pago is the breathtaking port of Pago.
