Still life: The Last Elf (No. 5)', Adrian Stokes, 1972

Tate Gallery, London, February 1973 (no catalogue); Literature: 1982-4, London 1986, p. 330-6, representative. Between the beginning of September 1972, after being diagnosed as having developed into an end stage carcinoma, and his passing on December 15, 1972, Adrian Stokes made eleven still-lives. Nine of the eleven works are part of the Tate and this is the third and fifth in the group.

For a more detailed description of the range, its conditions and date issues, please refer to the Still Life catalog entry: The last eleven (no.3) (Tate T03587). Like all but one of the nine works of the Tate, this picture, No. 5, was drawn on a ready-made screen, Winsor & Newton.

Like in the other, the densities of ink vary from very thin washings to insulated areas of impasto, some of which are abnormally thick for stokes, and there are areas with naked soil. No. 5, with No. 9 and No. 11 (Tate T03586, T03581), is the most light, with blank spots that underline the predominantly gray, verdant and rose compositions.
