West-Coast North IslandIts long coast is enchanting; world-class surf break meets sand bathing shores and rugged crags. While they may have begun as services groups, they are getting nearer and you will find galeries, arts centres, country fairs, design shops, museum and funny cafes.
The Waikato and Waitomo is a land of surprise. In the west are the famous surfbeach of Raglan, watched over by old, forested volcanos. The Waitomo Caves, an annual subterranean show that is explored by millions of people every year, whether on horseback, by sea or by canoe.
Taranaki originated from the seabed in a succession of eruptions that created this striking bend along the west coast of the North Island. Taranaki's skittle is the provincial icon and the setting for climbs and walks. Farming flourishes on the area' s rich lush lava soils, and the Taranaki and New Plymouth parks are among the most impressive in the area.
Taranaki also includes the myths and historical places of the locals. Further southwards, the Whanganui River meanders through the wooded mountain ranges and dales of the Whanganui National Park. It is rich in historical events and for hundreds of years it has been the "road" for M?ori, which used to live on its shores, an important tourist attraction.
In the interior, from the town of Wanganui to the Manawatu and Palmerston North regions, the country gives way to wealthy ovine and herds. Under Waitomo there are caves, subterranean passages, fossilized rocks, lime rock formation and fireflies. Kayak and canoe The Whanganui is New Zealand's longest river.
Hiking and hiking Take a brief stroll or a hike of several days through the wetland, mountain pastures and low-lying rainforest of Egmont National Park. Browse The sandy and dark sandy beach here is one of the best in the game. Whale Bay and Manu Bay try near Raglan; in Taranaki "Surf Highway 45" reaches prime break.
