Royal Engineers and their crews planned and built most of the Georgia and early Victorian architectural heritage of the Second Settlement of Norfolk Island.

Beattie was located in Hobart, where he founded his photo studios and shop in 1891. In 1896 he was named Tasmania's government photography officer and supported the state through lamppost slideshows, which also traveled to Great Britain.

Cecil Wilson, Bishop of the Diocese of Melanesia, invited J.W. Beattie to travel to the Pacific Ocean in 1906, which includes the island of Norfolk. During this voyage Beattie traveled aboard the Southern Cross V steamboat. The photos in this record were taken.

Craig was closely associated with the acquisition of Entally House as a National House in 1947. Together with Richard Green, his family Edith established the National Trust in Tasmania in 1960 to enable the acquisition of Franklin House. A leader in sensitizing the fellowship to the value and beauties of Tasmania's colorful Tasmanian monuments, he was trustee chair in 1963-72.

It' possible that this record was put together by E.W. Searle, who worked for Beattie from 1911-1915. He was interested in building a nationwide library of Australia's photo documents and his paperwork and some photo galleries are in the collections of the NL.
