Look at this one: A new $50 million shipyard in the Chatham Islands - a logistical challenge | 1 NEWS NOW
Local people have said to a federal mission that it is not the only line they need. Construction of a small harbour 800 km from New Zealand's continental shelf was no small task for those concerned. Today a political group, seven of them New Zealand ministers, came to the inauguration.
However, the local people have said to a federal mission that it is not the only life line they need.
The Chatham Islands receives'critical lifeline' for all weathers
Chatham Islands have been described as the most tumultuous water in the underworld. It has always been a connection to the outside worlds for the island' s inhabitants, but the new shipyard is a life line that will last 100 years. The shipyard was opened by Deputy Prime Minster Winston Peters, Interior Secretary Tracy Martin and a number of policy-makers who were present from the very beginning.
This old shipyard was in ruins and did not have the necessary efficiencies to bring its $300 million per year in shellfish to sea. Its main contrast to the new shipyard is the breakwash. "This means a lot to the entire isle. For the breakwaters, 3500 1.8 tonne boulders were needed, made on the islands from material from a stone pit that had been constructed specifically for the purpose.
Hon Kris Faafoi, Minister of Civil Defence, says the shipyard is "a vital artery for the Chatham Islands". "That means in an emergencies, the Chathams will be in a better position than ever to get the provisions and help they need." Next on the Chatham Island wish list is a new airstrip and more effective planes they want by the end of 2020.
