Tourism in the South Pacific Island States: The Challenge and Problems: Fiji's case

This document highlights and analyzes the problems and opportunities of the tourism sector in the most advanced South Pacific archipelago, Fiji. Much of the challenge that has been addressed is due to the interaction of historic facts and occurrences and the related interests. Fiji's colonisation, the historic roll of alien wealth in its expansion and evolution, the contradictory socio-economic and policy requirements of the two large ethnical groups (the Indians and the Indo-Fijians ), the question of ownership and more recently the 1987 and 2000 coup d'états and the resulting policy unstability are debated in the context of the tourism industry's expansion and evolution.

In addition, the authors discuss the effects of the coup d'états on the tourism sector and the importance of public-private partnership in the post coup recover.

Ecotourism on the Yasawa Islands

The Fiji is an archipelago with over 300 islands and 500 small islands in the lovely Southern Ocean. Yasawa Islands on the northwestern side of Fiji are a series of islands that have been beautifully conserved in their pristine state. Until the end of the 1980s, the Fiji authorities limited rural tourism in the Yasawa Islands.

That has enabled the islands to stay away from the modernisation we see in so many other places in Fiji and throughout the entire Southern Ocean. Yasawa now has a range of sustainability destinations, from affordable backpackers to all-inclusive luxurious destinations. That means that the Yasawa Islands have something for everyone.

Yasawa also has many islands with nothing but Fiji's own village, and some islands that are totally deserted. Created as a result of vulcanic activities million of years ago, the Yasawa Islands have a uniquely varied scenery. Guests can explore secluded towns and live the way they did when the first Fijians came here a thousand years ago.

The first thing you need to do to enjoy ecotourism in Fiji's Yasawa Islands is to select a place to spend the night. The Yasawa Islands range of destinations covers every budget and holiday type. But it is important to select a place that is truly enduring and works with the communities of Fiji to preserve the Yasawa Islands' natural beauties for future generations. 2.

The Yasawa Islands do not have many streets, and there are no viaducts between them. If you want to travel by sea most of your stay, but if you want to waste your free day visiting the sights, a floatplane trip is perhaps the best choice for you.
