Transport FijiTravelling through Fiji by public transport
A lot of local people are driving small lorries (so-called carriers) with a tarp on the back. They often have seats and some excursions between Nadi and Suva. They can be picked up in Nadi's major road; they run when they are full and are faster and only slightly more costly than the schoolbus.
Mini-vans are also becoming more and more frequent on the roads. Favoured by local people, they are also faster and more costly than a coach, but much less than a cab. Mini-vans plow up and down Queens Rd around Nadi.
Transport & Traffic in Fiji
Fiji's public transport system is quite good and provides a range of possibilities for visitors, from air travel to taxi services, busses and ferry services. The flight between Nadi and Suva takes about 35 min., but split or privat taxi services are quite inexpensive and a good way to explore the area.
Shared cabs from Nadi to Suva are about F$17, while taxi charges from Suva to Sigatoa are aboutF$80. To get around Nadi is just F$8-$10 from the airfield to the city, but it would be very simple to negotiate this for you. An inexpensive way to see Fiji, with fast trains along the Queens Highway and every half hours along the Viti Levu highway, is to take a bus.
Coaches are less frequent but have very little bus and coach use. Hup-on, hop-off busses also allow you to spend your Fiji vacation at your own speed at a set time. Ferry services with Nadi to the Mamanuca Groups and the Yasawa Group from 9.00 to 16.00 every day.
Connections to Vanua Levu and Ovalau every two weeks with ferry service to the North and South Islands. Mamanuca Resort's South Sea cruise operates ferry crossings between the islands on a day-to-day basis and is reasonablypriced with the major ferry companies being well-safe. It' s noteworthy that these ferryboats can be very full during the holidays.
