Keat's Island
One of the smaller Howe Sound islets, embedded off the Gibsons municipality on the Sechelt Peninsula on the Sunshine Coast. Unspoilt Keats Island is easy to access and a favourite nature reserve just a full day's drive from Vancouver. Little Keats Island is christened after Sir Richard Goodwin Keats, master of the HMS Superb under the commando of Admiral Horatio Nelson in 1803, and he later became Governor of Newfoundland in 1813.
Keats Island municipalities (3 sq/8 sq km ) are grouped around the two administrative quays; Keats Landing on the western and south-eastern coasts overlooking Gibsons and Eastbourne. The Keats Island housing estate consists mainly of cottages with about 80 full-time inhabitants. Many of the housing estates are only accessable from the waters.
The streets are a few rugged, linking places on the island, but there is very little use of vehicles. There is Keats Island in Howe Sound, opposite Gibsons on the Sechelt Peninsula. Keats Islanders can take a BC ferry from Horseshoe Bay to the Langdale Ferry Terminal on the Sunshine Coast just off Vancouver and take a boat cruise from Gibsons to Keats Island or a boat cruise directly from Horseshoe Bay (much longer).
The Plumper Cove Provincial Marineparks is one of the oldest naval sites on the BC coastline and a very favourite place to anchor during the hot-season. This 57 hectare large reserve is situated on the northwestern shores of Keats Island. Just a few and a half miles from the Langdale Ferry Terminal, Gibson Port is all it should be, full of boatloads, with an ambience as dense as mist on an autumn mornings.
On both sides of the Jervis Inlet the Sunshine Coast is divided into two parts. Crudely, the south half between the ferries at Langdale and Earls Cove is on the Sechelt peninsula, while the north half is between the ferries at Saltery Bay and Lund on the Malaspina peninsula.
It has a nice coast line deep in Jervis Inlet, Desolation Sound and Howe Sound. This is the name of the area. At between 1,400 and 2,400 sunny periods per year - an equivalent of 4 to 6 hrs per full year, according to where the readings are taken - the light is far brighter than the darker one.
The Howe Sound is only a few mins away, 15 mins from the centre of Vancouver.
