Collam (Quilon) (370,000 inhabitants) is a town located in Kerala, India. Acknowledged in Greek literatures of the first half of the 20th centrury, Kollam has been a flourishing commercial harbour for hundreds of years. It is a small town in the heart of the province. The neighbouring part of the town is known for its peppers (after which it is named), cashew nuts, coconut fibres and other farm produce. Christian, Moslem and hinduistic people belong to the group.
There is a sandy area to the east and just off the city, at the northern end of which there are several relicts from the colonisation of Europe, among them the remains of a fortress and some cathedrals. You can also find some old stonebuildings spread all over the city. The majority of the population will use the various north/south services or come by car.
As you would have expected, there are plenty of busses on all the main highways.... there is very little to do. There are good off-street places for vegetarians in the area just off the Main Rd stop, in front of the large round-about. Beef hunters can dine along the street just westwards of this area.
You' re on the street. Located in front of the temples in the Hauptstraße. There is only one cruise departing every day at 10:30 a.m. from the Fährterminal at the central train terminus, north-east of the highway circle, to Alappuzha (Alleppey). The shady upper decks are beautiful when the sun is shining and it is a great way to glide by and see India civilization, which includes traditional fishery skills.
