World Islands - Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Well-known for its luxuriant palm islands, the easy to spot artificial island off the coastline of the town. In 2003, Dubai's sovereign Sheikh Maktoum presented an even more daring skerries plan on the basis of the palm tree's success: a group of islands in the form of a world map. However, unlike the Palm Islands, the World Islands appear to have been a catastrophe of the world.

The building of the world islands began in September 2003. 321 million m3 of sands - the total from 150 Major League baseball stadia to the top of the fouls and the grandstands - will be more than $14 billion to construct the World Islands. The world islands together occupied over 20 sq. m. of the Persian Gulf with one for every land (except Israel).

Situated only three kilometres off the Dubai coastline, the 300 islands that make up the world islands will look like a world map from above. Sadly, the islands' creators found the islands' islands only vague. The world islands have eroded their clear boundaries due to degradation, extinction and degradation.

Apart from the esthetic problems, the world islands have no dependable power supply, as the plans to lay electrical cable under the Persian Gulf have evaporated. This is why 291 of the 300 world islands remained uncultivated and are only sandy to this date.

Although 60% of the islands were divested to privately-held businesses and investment until 2008, almost all of them have been left unaffected after eight years. By 2016, only nine of the islands had been developed: The six islands of the "Heart of Europe" Resorts, Pete's Island, Lebanon Island and Michael Schumacher Island (named after the seven-time Formula 1 World Champion).
