NIWA's mean national temperature was 12.9°C - the hottest May since the NIWA temperature range began in 1909. The temperature was 2.1°C above the May 1981-2010 averages. Forecast NIWA Chris Brandolino said that until May this year the temperature was above averages. Precipitation in much of the South Island was significantly above the norm - in some cases more than 150 per cent above the mean.

Derogations were parts of Canterbury, which were below standard. On the North Island, precipitation in Taranaki and Manawatu-Wanganui and in the west of the Wellington area was significantly higher than average. It was not surprising that the wet season means that the duration of the sun was below the norm in many areas, but Gisborne, Hawke's Bay and East Wellington were the exception with higher levels of rain than custom.

Among the available, regular solar observing stations, the four most sunny so far in 2016 were Richmond (1289 hours), Benheim (1167 hours), New Plymouth (1164 hours) and Takaka (1123 hours).
