Back to 2011 and our two-week journey around the North Island of New Zealand; explore the breathtaking scenery, hike the Tongariro Alpine Crossings, a highlight for the days in Hobbiton, the gentle slopes of Waikato and the attractions in the fun towns of Auckland and Wellington - memorabilia I will never ever get over.

This is just some of the activities on New Zealand's North Island. Until today Ian and I are talking about New Zealand and the funny adventure we had there with our mates and how we will return one time. Throughout our two week stay there we saw a difference to North and South Island.

But we also liked to explore the South Island in former times, but also what the North Island of New Zealand had to offers. As big supporters of the film'Lord of the Rings' we could not refuse to visit the places where the movie was shot. Who' d have thought back then that Hobbiton was ready to shoot "The Hobbit".

So here are a few things about why we like North Island: These are some pictures that will hopefully inspired you to come and see the North Island of New Zealand.

Nice pictures of New Zealand's North Island Strands

We' ve just returned to New Zealand, just after a two-week hike in Patagonia, waiting to put on our walking equipment and discover the surrounding area. Then we came to the hottest summers New Zealand has seen in years! Luckily for us New Zealand has an astonishing selection of beautiful sandy areas where we spent the afternoon enjoying the breathtaking view of the coast.

There are of course many other things to see on North Island New Zealand, but I would be wrong to say that we did as many as we had foreseen! The majority of New Zealand's global visitor base starts in Auckland, the city of sails, near the north part of the North Island.

Auckland has a ton of fine sandy beachs- here is a taste of your sun-kissed travel. The Piha Strand is epoxy. Our excursion to the sea was combined with the beautiful, relatively simple walk to the Kitekite Falls just a few mins away, and we also had a fantastic evening meal at the Piha Beach Cafe at sundown.

This was one of my favourite New Zealand holidays and is one of the best North Island atractions! It is a great place to spend time with small children in New Zealand. You will find SO MANY sands on the Coromandel Peninsula! It was Whangamata we used as a basis where we spent the night in a beautiful cabin we found through GuesttoGuest - for free (more details?).

On our cruise through Mercury Bay and Cathedral Cove with the glass bottom Whitianga, we took the chance to unwind and have a picknick on the beautiful little sands. It was Ronnie's great desire to go to the only true vineyard on the Coromandel Peninsula to do "research" for his position at New Zealand vineyards. Luckily, Mercury Bay Estate is opposite Cook's Beachs!

We' ve seen it from our cruise and it's just as remote and nice as we thought it would be - we think that makes it one of the best in Coromandel. Mostly a surfing city, a short walk to the Whangamata coast will show you why.

It is possible to hire board and surfboard directly on the beaches without booking. How about one of the most popular places, where you can find geothermal water directly on the bank to fill your own whirlpool? Cathedral Cove is the other North Island sandy place we miss.

The Cathedral Cove can only be accessed on foot and takes about an hours walking from the top of the cliff. Two unspoilt secluded shores are connected by an astonishing arch and when the flood is low enough you (and possibly tens of other visitors when you visit in high seasons as we were) can stroll between them.

Are you a fan of the beaches and want to discuss whether you want to go to New Zealand's North or South Island, go north! We hope you will find the right spot for your own New Zealand trip. Don't forgetting a great radiator for your sea trips - we purchased one when we first came to New Zealand and were saving tonnes of cash for meals every single working days by packaging them!

Are you looking for the best activities in Nelson, New Zealand (and surrounding area)? There is something for everyone, whether you want to unwind on the unspoilt beach, discover the many possibilities of the Nelson Bicycle Trails or discover the Abel Tasman Coastline Tracks on foot.
