Mt Victoria Wellington View Hike

Mount Victoria Lookout is within easy reach of Wellington's downtown and has a 360-degree view. Mount Victoria walks take you to 196m Mount Victoria with a 360 degree view of Wellington, New Zealand. You can take several trails to Mount Victoria. Wellington' Mount Victoria is the closest and most direct:

You will see a Southern Walkway signage at the end of Majoribanks Street. Continue along Mount Victoria Lookout's Mount Walkway through the woods. Whilst the path through the woods is the fastest way to Mount Victoria, it offers no panoramic view - unless you are standing on a tree - to the top.

Remember that it would be much more safe to go out on the streets if you were a woman alone than to run in a gloomy - and sometimes frightening - wood. Seeing as the path system in bushland and woods can be very bewildering, leading to the sense of being doomed, the stroll I'm going to describe here is an informal Mount Victoria Wellington stroll that leads you along the White Front and Oriental Parade of Wellington and then over streets to the top of Mount Victoria.

Take this stroll for panoramic vistas of the trail and vistas easterly and westerly of Mount Victoria to the top, where you'll get a 360-degree panoramic 360-degree look at Wellington Town. In order to get to the Mount Victoria vantage point in Wellington: If you have a vehicle, go up Mount Victoria. There is a stop at the top of Mount Victoria, but you still have to go on foot for a moment or two to get to the observation deck at the top of Mount Victoria.

Approximately $3.50 (from downtown) on Go Wellington #20 metro line; see Metlink for more information. From Wellington' s CBD (Central Business District) go to one of the Southern Walkway access points and then to Mount Victoria. A third alternative was chosen for the stroll described in this paper, with the entrance point on the Oriental Parade (the north end of the Southern Walkway).

For the Oriental Parade of Wellington's Citadel, head towards the harbour and then along the Wellington River Promenade past the Yacht Harbour, Freyberg Beach Play Area and Carter Memorial Fountain. Drive along the boardwalk, which also passes the Oriental Parade around the edge, until you see an opening on the right and a Southern Walkway signposted.

It' a 2.5 km long stroll, according to where you depart from in the CBD, and it should take between 25 and 30 min to get there. You will find a footbridge just before the entrance to the sidewalk. Turn right at the Southern Whalkway signs and follow the road uphill.

To get a look from a vantage point overlooking the street and the harbour, you can go up these stairs. Go back to the path and go further up. There are three more setbacks to make before you get to a crossroads where you can turn right and go on the Southern Walkway, or turn right to a play area and go up the street.

Make a stop at the children's area for an unhindered view of the town and the harbour [image: Well in Wellington Harbour with the town in the back (61 KB)], and then walk up the path. At the next intersection, turn right and walk to the street. Arriving at the street (The Crescent), walk right past a busstop [Picture: Busstop at The Crescent in Wellington (28 KB)] and walk up the street.

As you walk up the street you should be able to get a view of Wellington City here and there between and above the rooftops of homes [Image: Wellington City View between the homes on The Crescent (36 KB)]. Keep going up the Cresent until you get to the junction with Grafton Rd.

Go up the steps to get to Palliser Road. When you are on Palliser Road, turn right and go on to the next junction. Turn into Roseneath Terrace at the junction and turn right into Thane Road at the next junction. Drive on Thane Road past Robieson Street until you see the junction with Lookout Road.

Turn right onto Lookout Road. You should see a few staircases in front of you going to the viewpoint of the Centennial Memorial: Step to the viewpoint of the Centennial Memorial on Mount Victoria (60 KB)]. Go up the flight of stairs. The Wakefield Memorial at the Centennial Memorial Lookout on Mount Victoria (47 KB)].

Leaving the monument, turn to your right into Lookout Rd and follow the street until you see Mount Victoria Lookout[Image: GO Wellington bus at Mount Victoria (43 KB)]. As Mount Victoria's peak is subject to the weather, this hike is best done on a bright, warm summer morning with little or no breeze.

Those aren't common in Wellington, but they do happen. Every windspeed of 10 km/h or less is ideal to see Mount Victoria. You can see from the photos above and the videos below that not a soul was at the vantage point when I was there.

Be sure to anticipate that it will be bustling or very bustling when you are visiting, as it is a very much loved tourism destination in Wellington. Path length: 2 km (1.2 miles) to Mount Victoria vantage point, beginning at the north end of the Southern Walkway. Hiking time: From Wellington's CBD it is 30 min to the beginning of the Southern Walkway on Oriental Parade and then another 25 - 35 min to the top of Mount Victoria.

Half the way back you'll probably take on the way down, 15 min, and then 30 min back to the beginning of the stroll. Therefore, you should allow 2 lessons for the stroll. Route type: Footpath, sign-posted footpath and open streets. First part of the path is precipitous, but not too precipitous.

As soon as you go along the streets, the path will usually be a soft ascent with a mix of footpath and stairs for climbing. There is no mud, except when one walks on damp gras on certain parts of the pavement, when one approaches the top of Mount Victoria.

The hike is very strenuous for the upper leg and gluteal musculature, and you need good cardio-vascular condition to get up the hillside and all the steps. The best way to walk: in the mornings for a view of the town or the airports. Midday view of the northeast rolling countryside and mountain range. Things to see: Picturesque vistas of Wellington Town, Wellington Harbour, surrounded mounds and peaks and Wellington International Park.
