MAR 1-3 was Yap Day, the largest Yap arts festival and its most colourful festival of the year, with folk dancing, handicrafts, tattooing, contests and shows in ceremony attire. All Yapese - Micronesia's most unspoilt tradition - is heralded. March 1 started the 48th Yearly Yap Day with a shell bubble, a procession, a color show, a benediction, a stone cash remittance and a show, opening addresses and talks by members of the local and state leaders.

Every Japanese ball has a different tale. Seated dancers are usually darker. A lot of Yaps adorn their body with complicated tattooing designs, which often denote a high level of societal state, experience in combat or navigational ability. Bamboos and stand-up dancers are strenuous and usually reserved for young people. Yapesen begin to learn to dance as kids and often continue to do so into late adult life when the physical condition needed for it is weak.

In Yap the arts of canoeing and navigating are still practised, although many of the magical ceremonies and initiations have been forgot or given up. The men of Ma'ap town in a folk martial arts performance. Yap Day's first Yap Day celebration is a young people's dancing procession that begins here at the Yap Living History Museum in the centre of Colonia.

Yapa's tradition of art and craftmanship is always a big success with visitors to the show. Yap Day is just another Yap Day for many Yapesen. Young people are waiting for their first dancing appearance in Ma'ap. Tradicional shipping undergraduates prepare to take the Yap Day visitors to the Windward Laguna.

If you are in Yap, do it like the Yapese, delicious with tubas, the indigenous calamope. Tradicional sailors traversed the insidious waters in quest of adventures without the help of advanced navigation devices or even a com-pass.
