"Tokelau " (English as "Tokelauan") relates both to the tribe and its unmistakable Polyynesian tongue, as well as to its home, which is made up of three atolls: "Tokelau " means "north" or "northeast" in many of Polynesia's tongues, among them their own, but it was also the name of the outstanding Almighty Tui Tokelau.
In 1841 the name "Union Islands" was chosen to refer to the three monarchs known as Duke of York (Atafu), Duke of Clarence (Nukunonu) and D'Wolf or Bowditch (Fakaofo). The Tokelau lords never used these name, but they were "official" for over a hundred years, until the three archipelagos and their respective locals were jointly called Tokelau in 1948 and in 1976 Tokelau.
They are located on a northwest-southeast route of about 150 kilometres between 8 and 10 S and 171 and 173 W. The nearest islets of all sizes are those of Western Samoa, about 480 kilometres to the southwest. Taken together, the altolls have a surface area of only about 12 km2 and are divided by 60 to 90 kilometres of open ocean.
All of them are real atolls: they have main ponds surrounded entirely by a sandy island and debris rich in corals. Since then, the populations of the Aletolls have grown slowly and quickly, peaking at 1,900 in the mid-1960s. After that, it fell and stabilised at around 1,600 in the 1970s-1980s, after emigrating relatively strongly to New Zealand, where about 3,400 people identify themselves as Tokelau in 1986.
Though Tokelau's younger forefathers include some other Polynesians and European citizens, only those with (or with) Tokelau forebears are constant inhabitants of the antolls. Tokelau belongs to the Samoic subgroup of Polish and is probably most intimately related to the Tuvalu (Ellice) dialect.
Up until recently, all of Tokelau citizens were bi-lingual in Samoan, the Christian and literary languages from which their own languages have developed strongly for over a hundred years without losing their own particularities. Tokelow tradition maintains indigenous roots; temporary archeological proofs show humans who a thousand years ago lived in the Samoan and Tuvalan cultures in the Tokelau region.
Verbal tales tell of animosities between the three Aylls, which ended when Fakaofo won the upper hand through the conquest of Nukunonu and the expulsion of the tribe of Atafu; until the 19th centuries researchers found Atafu inhabited, Nukunonu slightly populated and Fakaofo clearly outstanding as the site of the highest chieftain and the shrine of Tui Tokelau.
The domination of the missions was slightly impaired at the end of the last millennium, when the plains were proclaimed Britain's protected states. In 1916 Tokelau was added to the Gilbert and Ellice Island colony, which was then taken away when New Zealand took over control of the Atlas on Britain's behalf in 1926.
In spite of these regulations, the management of Tokelau until after the Second World War can best be described as good-natured abandon. The people of Tokelau were granted New Zealand nationality in 1948, but it was not until the sixties that they began emigrating there. In the mid-70s, the assistance and developing programmes were escalating, supported by the growing integration of the people of Tokelau into management and decision-making functions.
However Tokelau is still a New Zealand dependence on the explicit and repeated wishes of its people. There is a clearly defined town on one of the lee islands of each of the atolls. It is the sea or the back of the town that is the favourite place for cooking in. Villages equipment - churches, meeting rooms and cricketing places - are bundled in the middle, while the recently built community facilities - Kopra Shed, clinics and clinics - are on the periphery.

Thus, the homes are varied and adaptable in their compositions, but due to the density of open village settlements it is known where everyone is at any given tim. If the assets are split within a family group, they are split into fair portions in the name of the founder's live or deceased child.
These targeted actions depend on their oral abilities, as embassies are accompanying goods and must be communicated precisely. Tokyo is a New Zealand addiction. In the end, men have greater power than their wives and control the whole town. However, Tokelau cartridges can be very bossy and are not so readily rejected by their males. Every town has a government board made up of masculine elder and/or leaders of recognised kinship groups.
There are two officers who have been elected: a municipal official and the head or head of community work. It has very significant powers in the towns to issue and enforce laws locally and to decide, manage and regulate all rural activity. Many other groups work in the rural environment under the leadership of the councillor.
Men's staff, consisting of all capable grown men, take care of and improve the rural facilities, provide the town and/or its visitors with groceries etc. Females from the villages supplement the men's workforce and take on jobs and work in the feminine sphere, such as weaving mats and keeping the mammals.
Differently, each town will be split into two rival sides. It is a pattern of organisation that is valid for all three towns, but it is taking shape in every single form. The meetings in a hamlet contained traditional ceremonies such as the opening of churches and the cricketing, and although these had an undercurrent of politics resulting from historic opposites, the opposites were dampened by many special loyalities founded on relationships between the hamlets.
With Tokelau having more influence over his own business, each community makes sure that no one gets more than his own portion of employment, relief money and so on. These bi-annual general assemblies alternate between the members of the congregation, are led by the host villagers and are real platforms in which the interests of the three communities are intensively discussed.
It' remarkable that in the Tokelau community of New Zealand, too, if not more, atoll paradox is being used. In a small molehill town it is not possible to leave a person's coming and going unattended. Human activity is carefully planned and supervised by the oldest members of the community and their older relatives.
There have been hardly any clashes between the antolls since the founding of the Fakaofo people. okelau has no enemy neighbours. The local council members mediate efficiently in the case of disputes. It will also lead the contest between the two sides of the town, for example in the current crime games and the Lied Dancing Exchange.
Christianity has been a key element of Tokelau since the second half of the 19th c.. Tokelau was outstanding, had no apparent being and was depicted by a giant column packed in mats in front of his Fakaofo cloakroom. In the 1850s and 1860s, Catholics and Protestants were competing for the Tokelau people.
But a real oecumenical mind has prevailed there and has become part of Tokelau's general morals. Protestants or Catholics, Tokelau Christianity is fundamentalistic and puritan. It preaches the moral of Christians in order to promote the Tokelau commandments: respects for the elder, obey for the parent, communal oneness, equity for all, etc.
Catholics have a catechist, always from Tokelau, and sometimes also a non-Tokelau clergy. Festivals, whether of Croatian or Tokelau descent, have both traditional as well as traditional elements. Imaginative art is the most advanced and highly inventive of the Tokelau art forms. Clinics with western qualified Tokelau physicians and nursing staff have been rural facilities for many years. If they are ill or hurt, most patients go to the hospital.
Some locals are recognised massage therapists whose ability is to alleviate or rectify various states. The ringing of the bells signals deaths in the town, and from then on all other activities are suspended until the funeral. When the corpse is placed in the casket, those in the home of sorrow meet to take part in the last farewell.
