North Line Islands

Northern Line Islands is a group of islands in Oceania. The Line Islands, a string of Pacific Ocean islands, some of which are Kiribati and some are considered as non-incorporated areas of the United States. Line Islands stretch 1,600 mile (.600 km) northwest of France-Polynesia. The islands have a surface area of 193 sq. km (500 sq. km) and are subdivided into northern, middle and south groups.

They are all formed by corals, but only six have aeolics, which makes them an atoll. Northern Line Islands consist of Teraina Island and Tabuaeran and Kiritimati Atlas, all parts of Kiribati from its 1979 independency, and Kingman Reef, Palmyra Atoll and Jarvis Island, all non-incorporated states.

Kiribati also includes the Common and Northern Line Islands; the Commonwealth of Malden and Starbuck Islands make up the group. Vostok and Flint Islands form the group. Except on the Kiritimati and Tabuaeran islands and on the island of Teraina there is no population.

A billion humans rely on nourishment and other reefs, one of the most prolific and varied eco-systems in the world. Recently, a connection has been established between the wrecks on the Pacific Islands and the eruption of morphs as naval invertebrates. Corallimrophs, a poisonous organisms that resembles a crossing between a reef and an anenoma, have bloomed on these cliffs and destroyed all of them.

Giant parts of the once thickly packed sea corals are now obscured by this rarely seen habitat. Our research aims to find out what causes this shifting on the dive and how these reffees can best be managed and restored to their state. As they are some of the few pristine eco-systems, it is of the greatest importance that we farm and preserve them so that they can be preserved and learned from for coming generation.
