Haast Highway between Haast and Haast Pass passes cliffs and floodplains. It' re rewarding to make the very close way to the Thunder Creek Falls near Pleasant Flat - a 28 metre high cascade next to the Haast Highway. A further stop is the gate of Haast.

Beautiful canyon with giant lumps of rock was the most difficult part of the Haast Highway. The Haast mountain passport lies 563 meters above sealevel and is the deepest passage over the Southern Alps. The Blue Pool Walk is one of the best shorter strolls near the mountain passes. It' a simple stroll to a row of crystalline basins cut from the rock by hundreds of years of rock-pollution.

Between Haast and Jackson Bay there are beautiful sandy areas, sand dunes, lochs and water areas. The area is ideal for hiking and hitchhiking and there are many Department of Conservation hikes in the area for you to discover.

Humans come here, not only because of the landscape, but also because of the hunt and the tramp.
