Activities on Guam Island
Walking through Tumon may be reminiscent of Waikiki in Hawaii, but you will find a distinctive civilization marked by Guam's native Chamorro legacy, years of colonialism in Spain, a brief Japanese invasion of World War II and more than a hundred years of US lobby.
All over the island the culture meets, but perhaps nowhere more clearly than on a typical Feastas. Here you will be able to enjoy the Chamorro kitchen magical blend of flavours and texture from all over the globe. Almost every week-end, fiestas are organized to commemorate the festival of the patrons of the village, a heritage of the Roman Catholic religion that the Spaniards celebrated in the sixteenth cent.
The majority of fiestas are organized by either native homes or religious institutions, but visitors can book tours through travel agencies and the Guam Visitors Bureau. The festivities often begin with a service and a parade through the town, and are continued with arts and crafts events such as musical and dancing shows. Traditionally, a fiestas meal could be made of white rices dyed with agote seeds; fina'denne, a spice flavoured with pickled egg and onion; tittiyas, a flat bread made from maize or meal tortillas; eleguen, a ceviche-like meats or shellfish meal flavoured with citron and pepper; and barbeque that marinades in sojasauce, cloves and the chef's secrets.
You will also find imported goods such as Philippine limpia, philippine ashimi, Chinese sucking toy and even bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken. Formally an uncorporated area of the United States, Guam's 209 sq. m. has a resident populace of nearly 180,000. It is also home to a considerable naval and airbase force base force, which makes up almost a third of the island's landmass.
Situated in the Pacific Ocean, just above the International Date Line, Guam is about three fourths of the way from Hawaii to the Philippines, with the tagline "Where America's Day Begins".
