Capabilities forfeited, faraway recollections

Kitin Munoz, a Spaniard who discovered Spain, is constructing a boat with which he will be sailing from Easter Island to various harbours in the South Pacific. The multinational Munoz and his crew believe they will follow in the steps of a pre-historic nation that is said to have crossed the oceans on similar ships.

Ammunoz is supported by the Explorer's Club alliance, UNESCO, the Spain and a leading watchmaking group. However, it is the commitment of the Bolivian Indians and the local Easter Islanders, known as Rapa Nui, that gives the initiative its spirit and power. The Aymara Indians from Lake Titicaca in Bolivia were taken from Munoz to Easter Island to build canoes there.

The 3,000 locals of Easter Island join the scheme to bring back to life forgotten abilities and memory. We' re trying to show that we travelled like this before," said Eddie Tuke from Easter Island. "He' Hota Matua, the first Easter Island kings, came in a boat like the one we're building."

Ammonoz and his crew collect reed from a vulcanic sea to construct the crude boat on which they will soon be setting sails. After a petrograph, the sketch is engraved in one of the Maoi of Easter Island, the huge rock sculptures for which the island is known. "It' a classical boat built on old sketches and prototypes," says Munoz.

"We' re just using our own palms and reeds to make the boat.
